Saoirse Ronan wouldnt surprise me as she has worked with PJ before and that would be an advantage to her since he knows she wont have a hissy fit at his working conditions. by most accounts she did good work on lovely bones and should do ok in the role.
the hobbit forums all seem to regard Itaril as a new [madeup] character, so it may be Pj wrote it for her and auditions were a formality.
im disappointed for sophie... but bigger things will come along. perhaps it may be an advantage for her if her first role has a"new zealand" flavour to it.

Yes, I suppose she should start small. I thought she could still be in it, like in the background or something, but then, she's very pretty, she might steal some of Saoirse's thunder. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI bet they added the role for romance value, or just to add some femininity, as there are very few female characters in the actual story. I think the only one was Bilbo's cousin, one of the Sackville-Bagginses, who wanted his hobbit hole after he was presumed dead. People liked the Arwen & Aragorn story, so they're probably trying to make something similar to that. And an elven story would increase the opportunities of ethereal voices to be incorporated throughout the movie. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

I thought she could still be in it, like in the background or something, but then, she's very pretty, she might steal some of Saoirse's thunder. the trouble is, libby, that people confuse peter jackson movies with NZ movies. we have our own national character and our own stories to tell. sophie might be better served to make a "real" nz film. at the very least it would endear her to new zealanders who could relate to the story being told at a more nationalistic level not that im criticizing peters epics, just suggesting middle earth don't have much to do with us folk. the hobbit had potential as a sophie vehicle. but the fact she isnt in it isnt the end of possibilities for advancing her career. its simply an opportunity to think of better things. sophie would steal a movie from saorise no trouble. she does have a certain ethereal-ness about her but i dont really sense any stage presence. yeah, pretty much.... its a blokes story though... i dont see the necessity for a girl. it would be like the movie "stand by me" with a girl lead. but what would i know about creating drama. i wonder about saorise's casting, i dont see it on google news... and wonder what she could do. she seems just a little young to play a romantic lead in a movie and i dont buy her as spiritual guide to frodo's embattled character. even one with a role created for her. seems a little nepotistic i remember that. he hated her aw shucks, ive written a book... the spiderman

She hated him, too, Spiderman, so much that she stole some silver spoons! In fact, everyone was quite disappointed that he hadn't died, after all! I'm not sure what Frodo has to do with anything... If you mean Bilbo, there are no elves from Mirkwood who guide, or do anything, with Bilbo. They imprison the dwarves, and would have done the same to Bilbo, but Bilbo was invisible the whole time he's with the Woodland elves. That's how he's able to help the dwarves escape, and not be imprisoned himself. So it's safe to say they were not exactly as friendly as Galadriel or Elrond. No, the casting is still "rumored". But as I said, the fact that IMDB lists Saoirse at all, as well as the character she's presumed to play, leads me to believe a casting announcement is close. You even said yourself that PJ might even have written the role for Saoirse. I think that's quite possible. Of course, Ian MacKellan still hasn't been "officially" announced as Gandalf, even after all this time, either, but there's no question he's the one to play Gandalf. He's seen the script, after all. If you want up-to-date, accurate info on all casting and everything Hobbit, go to TheOneRing.net, not Google news. I made the link clickable - Richard

I rarely go to movies but if hayley gets the role to sing the theme I will go until the dvd is released. Then I'll listen to her on the dvd. If there's a God in Heaaven , please let Hayley do the theme.

I am not much of a movie goer myself either. I did see The King's Speech the other day, the only movie I have been to see for a few years I think.
But if Hayley is involved in one, I will be there like a shot!

Larry, there's also the hope she'll perform the song at the Academy Awards! Enya and Annie Lennox each sang their songs at the Academy Awards, the years the movies and soundtracks were nominated. Annie's won the award, too. So, that's another thing we'd have to look forward to, if she sang for the soundtrack (I'm hoping she does vocals in addition to the theme song, as Enya did). That would be in early 2013, at the earliest. So, at least 2 years to go, for that! BTW, the start date for principal photography is March 21st! And the "unexpected party" are all in NZ getting ready to start (following PJ's recovery from ulcer surgery, of course).

There's a casting call for "elf extras" Feb. 26th. Well, I guess Sophie can't be one, unless she's 5'9'' or taller! Whatever happened to special effects, anyway? She's in the right age group, at least. I wonder how tall Saoirse is... Just checked, and she's only 5'6''. Well, it only says the extras have to be that tall, not the main stars. bit.ly/hrIxFQSpeaking of Saoirse, she won best supporting actress for her recent movie "The Way Back", at the Irish Film & Television awards. She was asked about being in the Hobbit, but she said nothing was confirmed yet. She didn't say she hadn't been asked, or hadn't tried out.. just that nothing's confirmed.

I didn't decide anything, spider. I just didn't remember, but I knew she's not 5'9"! Anyway, I think elves are supposed to be extra tall. I've been reading LOTR, and Galadriel of Lothlorien is described as being quite tall. Cate Blanchett is 5'8 1/2", and Liv Tyler (Arwen) is 5'10"! The men are supposed to be 6' or taller. Men of that height would seem a bit easier to come by. The elves in the Hobbit will be mainly wood-elves of Mirkwood, and some Rivendell ones, too (Elrond). Well, Orlando Bloom (Legolas) is only 5'10" too, and he's a wood-elf. So apparently the main stars don't have to "measure up"! Good one, I know! :2fun: I wonder if Sophie will try out again. I think she should give it a shot, if she can.

Thanks Libby! I have actually not read "The Hobbit" but I've read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Although I hope to read it in the near future, my bf is a big fan but he hasn't heard any news from the future Hobbit movie...this is going to make his day

Hi all For people interested in The Hobbit movies, this is an excellent 10-minute videoblog from Peter Jackson: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hobbit-2010/trailers/11142704When the Fellowship of the Ring "Shire" music begins it almost feels we're back in Middle Earth already Kind regards Colin

Yes, I saw that when it was first posted on PJ's Facebook, but I was happy to see it again! Another tidbit for those interested: Saoirse Ronan has unfortunately declined the role of Itaril. She says it's due to the fact she'd have to be filming it for about a year, and she has a lot of other projects she's interested in. I guess you can't blame her, but it's really unfortunate. She said before that back when she was filming the Lovely Bones, PJ and team asked her if she'd like to be in the Hobbit, and she said yes. So I have a feeling the role of Itaril was sort of designed for her. I wonder if they'll just get somebody else, or forget the idea completely. I think they should keep the story line. They need some elvishness in it, and a lady elf would be nice. Legolas and Elrond are of course returning to the story, too. I think Legolas most likely was supposed to be Itaril's love interest, so it will be interesting to see who they choose as a replacement. Saoirse's way too young for Orlando, anyway, but elves are supposed to be immortal, so it wouldn't have mattered that much!
