Hey Richard, did you see it? You always "like" my Hobbit posts on FB, so I'm just wondering.

Hello Libby! I've only watched the little clips so far, but I'm seriously thinking of going to see it before the end of the year. I haven't been to the cinema for several years, and I wasn't tempted by the latest James Bond film. Richard

Neither was I! LOL I like very few movies, either. The Hobbit is really, really good, you'll enjoy it very much, if you like the little clips. It was fun to see the scenes I'd seen in the clips, and then finally see what happens next!

I just saw it for a second time last night...Very tempting since I have a theater right across the street from me. I can hardly wait to see how PJ realizes Smaug's character in the next movie. Because the book gives Smaug more personality than you would expect from a big fire breathing monster.

Yes, I can't wait to see Smaug next year, either! However, during the trailers, I did see Benedict Cumberpatch, who does the voice (and motion captures, I think), in a trailer for a new Star Trek movie. He also did the voice of the Necromancer, which is in the first movie, as well. I couldn't make out anything he was saying this time; probably some foul Mordor speech. LOL Originally, people had been saying Andy Serkis would be doing Smaug, as well as Gollum. I think because he had also taken on the role as second unit director, he decided not to, either that or it was just a rumor. I was a little disappointed when I found out somebody else would be doing it. However, when I heard Benedict Cumberpatch speaking in War Horse, I thought he had a very unique voice that would be great for the role of Smaug! So, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing Smaugh speak! BTW, I think the title of this thread ought to be changed now. True, 2 of the movies are still in the future... but maybe we could just call it "The Hobbit Movies" or "The Hobbit Trilogy" or something.

Hello Libby! I've changed the title of this thread to "The Hobbit Movies" as you suggested. That should cover all future possibilities. Richard

From the Official Charts News thread, after the soundtrack to 'The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey' dropped out of the main UK Album Chart: Well, at least the movie itself is still going strong at the box office! Have you contributed to that yet, or will you just wait for it to come out on DVD? I wouldn't blame you, it's long. At least when you watch a movie on DVD, you can pause for potty breaks! Hello Libby! I haven't got round to seeing it yet, but I hope to soon. I want to see the scenery and the special effects on a big screen. Richard

Yes, I know! Some party-poopers are complaining that they made the story too heavy with all the Azog vs. Thorin stuff (which was mostly made up by the producers; because Azog really did die!), and that it made them fall asleep. Well, I say, they were probably just tired, and if they went at night, that probably didn't help. I went in the late morning/early afternoon, so I wasn't a bit tired. I remember watching the first LOTR movie for the first time at home, and it was night time, and I got very, very sleepy. I didn't understand anything that was happening, so that made it seem longer. However, after I read the books, it went by way too fast! That's what happened this time with the Hobbit. That's why I was so anxious to see it again, but it looks like I will have to wait for the cheap ticket theater to start showing it. Oh well, only a few more months! I can't wait till the Oscar's either. They have to win something. I'm really hoping for best original score and original song (Song of the Lonely Mountain), but with Les Miz annoyingly in the mix, it may not happen this time. LOL Sorry Les Miz fans. The main theme is great, but I'm a tiny bit disappointed with the soundtrack; there's not nearly as much extra beautiful music like in the Fellowship and ROTK. A lot of great battle, adventure, and horror music, but not nearly enough Shire/hobbit themes. And a lot of it's taken from the LOTR soundtrack themes, so much of it isn't really that new at all. Of course it'll still get nominated. I did notice that LM was nominated for 4 Golden globes, but it wasn't nominated for original score, just for original song. How they can have an original song for an already-existing musical is beyond me. I haven't noticed whether the Hobbit is nominated for the GG's, but I know it will be for the Oscar's. I looked it up, and the only LOTR movie that won a Golden globe was ROTK, none of the others.

Hello Taylor and Libby! I've moved the four posts above from the Official Charts News thread, to keep both threads on topic. Richard

I think the only reason Fantasy films ever win major Oscars is when the organisers realise they will look really, really, bad if they don't hand them out. It's why LotR won so many of the technical awards, but almost none of the Best Film/Actor type awards. Despite some truly amazing performances, the total number of acting nominations for all three films was one - Ian McKellen for Best Supporting. He didn't get it.
They had to give Return Of The King Best Picture (After only giving nominations to the other two) if they were to retain even the faintest shred of credibility, IMO. I'd bet they knew it, too.
The Hobbit will be similarly ignored, I have no doubt. I'd love them to shock me, though!

I've found some more chart news about 'The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey'. 'My Dear Frodo' entered last week's UK Official Classical Singles Chart at No.5, but it's dropped to No.9 this week (w/e 5 January 2013). This is based on sales of the digital download track. www.officialcharts.com/official-classical-singles-chart/Richard
