It looks like Peter Jackson is planning to do 2 Hobbit movies, which most likely will be in NZ, and for which he will hopefully choose Howard Shore as the composer. Howard Shore, in turn, could very likely select Hayley Westenra to sing for the soundtrack(s). So here is an interview with Elijah Wood (Frodo), in which they briefly discuss the movies, for anyone who is interested : www.firstshowing.net/2008/01/11/elijah-wood-confirms-dual-hobbit-movie-details/

Thanks for that, Libby. I would like to think that, if the LOTR trilogy had been made a few years later, Hayley might have been chosen for it's soundtrack. The article to which you link states that the first Hobbit movie may be released in 2010 and the second in 2011 so we have a long wait yet. Roger

In fact Libby/Roger, the Director has already been chosen (Guillermo del Toro - director of Pan's Labyrinth) with Peter Jackson acting as Executive Producer.

Hi Everyone,
This is excellent news. I knew that The Hobbit was being made but that was about it.
Pan's Labyrinth is my favourite movie ever, with Lord Of The Rings not far behind it...... Guillermo del Toro working with Peter Jackson... it's almost certainly going to be a huge success.

In fact Libby/Roger, the Director has already been chosen (Guillermo del Toro - director of Pan's Labyrinth) with Peter Jackson acting as Executive Producer. If someone else is directing it, I wonder if they'll still make it in New Zealand. They should, since people got used to seeing that scenery for Middle Earth from the LOTR trilogy. And if, for some odd reason, they do it someplace else, they should still definitely have Hayley sing for it, and Howard Shore direct the music. "The Hobbit" wouldn't be the same without the proper Hobbit music! Hayley could sing tracks for scenes involving the elves, like Enya did, and maybe something for the credits, too.

So far, New Zealand will be the location for The Hobbit, and Ian McKellan returns as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis is going to be Gollum again (well, who else? ), as well as Smaug the dragon! I hope Hayley sings for the soundtrack. I can't wait for this movie to come out! It's making me want to read the book again.

Pre-production and writing has begun, and the films are projected to be out in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Howard Shore will be the composer for sure. It's still not certain what the second movie will be like.

A few months ago, I discovered a fan mail address for Peter Jackson at WingNut films, and decided to send him a letter suggesting that Hayley sing for the soundtrack. Well, I finally sent it on Feb. 20th, and got a response exactly 2 weeks later, right along with my RoD poster! That was probably the most exciting mail I've ever received (other than Hayley CDs, of course)! It was actually somebody on behalf of Peter, not Peter himself. Here's what they wrote: "Thank you for your letter to Peter Jackson. Due to the vast amount of mail he receives he is regretfully unable to respond personally. He has asked me to reply on his behalf. I must thank you very much for writing to Peter and for your kind words. Work on 'The Hobbit' is still in the very early stages, but we are planning on starting proper production at some time early next year. I'm glad to hear you are happy about the inclusion of Howard Shore in the team, as we rate him and his work very highly and are very much looking forward to working with him again. We are not certain who will be chosen to sing on the soundtrack at this time, but Hayley Westenra is a world renowned singer with a great reputation, and I'm sure this will be taken into consideration when looking for the appropriate singer for the music." So, as they said, it's still really early, but now they have the idea in their minds. I wanted to do it early enough also because of my idea for Hayley to actually appear as one of the elves that sings in the story, either in Mirkwood or Rivendell. It's especially important for Howard Shore to consider, though. He may very well have her in mind for the soundtrack, even without my suggestion, because of her involvement in the LOTR symphony. But I assume Jackson and del Toro have the final say. I encourage others to write, as well. I think they might very well have chosen her even without letters, but writing will get their attention and encourage them that people will like a song by Hayley in the movie.

Well, I suppose when it actually happens, you'll all be very interested. If Enya and Annie Lennox could sing their songs on the Academy Awards, so could Hayley!

Doesn't my news interest any of you in the least? I think it's very extremely exciting! Don't you realize how this might impact Hayley's career?

Oh yes, the possibility is very exciting! But as you said, it's very early stages, so I'm going to keep the cork in the bubbly until something solid comes up. If the films don't come out until 2011, it's quite a wait, isn't it? I guess we can all dream that by 2011 the people working on the Hobbit films will be desperate for Hayley and not the other way round!

I think they'd be nuts not to choose her! You never know what singers could pop up by then. I'm guessing the singer would have to start recording by early 2011, going by what I read about the LOTR films.
