Hi everyone. This follows on a post by Richard ( HERE) who advised Stephany on the significance of the Duke of Wellington's boots. Realising I was about to lead myself astray from Richard's initiative I started a new thread. My following monologue will give the flavour and so I invite others to add their thoughts on 'Weird Associations'. For the benefit of those overseas or for whom Eglish is a second language if people had been born with different names we could be: - Eating Wellington Boots
- Wearing sandwiches
- Eating cardigans
All because: - It was the Duke of Wellington who invented that style of footwear and personally paid to have his regiment kitted out in them!
- The Earl of Cardigan invented that style of alternative woollen wear to a 'pullover' or 'jumper' to save ruffling his hair when putting it on or taking it off.
- The Earl of Sandwich (a town in Kent) hated having his chess games interrupted by meal times so had his meat sliced and placed between two slices of bread.
So, who else has Weird Connections to offer--not necessarily in English if it can be properly explained and preferably (or at least very minimally) not quoting the nonEnglish language? A word of warning--please watch the British-American double entendres. The only ones I know are too close to the wind to be acceptable here, unless someone has a way of explaining them without being too risqué! Peter S.
