From the news wires:
Kiwi Songbird Goes Punk
1 April 04
The Morning Dispatch
Carla Brown
16-year-old singing phenom ditches classical for garage sending Decca into a frenzy.
Hayley Westenra, the young singing sensation from Christchurch, New Zealand, stunned the music world today when she announced in a press conference she was no longer interested in singing light classical fare and would take up Punk Rock effective immediately.
Blithely jettisoning her nice-girl image, Westenra, who turns 17 in less than two weeks, sported a choppy Mohawk buzz-cut, fresh tattoos and ragged work clothes topped by a spiked collar.
Her mother, acclaimed photographer Jill Westenra, stood behind her daughter and beamed with pride as Hayley gave the reporters on hand an impromptu punked-out version of a Vivaldi-inspired song which she renamed "River of Screams."
As expected, Decca is in a dither over this shocking development. Calls to the record company were not returned, but executives at its London headquarters were seen wearing long faces and thousand-yard stares wherever they went.
