Hi Everyone, Have been thinking for a while about an Off Topic Thread and here it is !! I am absolutely fascinated with France !! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifMy "Love Affair" with that country began in 1961 as a 15 year old, when our school was flooded and we were invited as a class to the town of Frejus in the south of France. I was billeted with an elderly sweet couple for 3 weeks, and loved it !! My other highlight during that time was a visit to St.-Tropez one sunny day !! We sat down for a milkshake looking out at the cruisers in the harbour, surrounded by very fashionable people !! I remember looking around very studiously to catch a glimpse of Brigitte Bardot !! To be continued.......... Love, Marianne Map linked to Vaskens website.

Remember 1littlegirl that if it is Paris you want, separate from France itself (a touring trip) you can 'pop' over to Paris for the day from London. Okay, like London, you probably want to spend a minimum of two or three days in Paris, but just a point to bear in mind. With Eurostar, Paris is under three hours from London. So in your planning, you might like to bear that in mind. However, you perhapos ought to book your Eurostar tickets ahead of time to be certain.
A point I ought to draw to your attention, Katie. Don't think of Paris as in 'another country' but 'down the road' from London.

Hi Marianne What a great idea for a thread I too love France and have been a few times including the north coast, Brittany and of course Paris - some 3 times. The first time I stayed in a hotel right in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower Cathleen . I would readily go again & again. I have not yet visited the south of France though, although I am going on a 2 day trip to Monte Carlo in May i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI have to say that my favorite holiday destination currently though is the Gulf Coast of Florida, particularly Sarasota area. We have been there twice in the last few years and just love the lifestyle. We always rent a villa, as the Americans would say, in a regular neighbourhood and like to live as an american for those few weeks. I think thats enough for now from me. Love the thread Marianne. Hope to chat with you tonight (or for you tomorrow morning) Best wishes Mark

My friends in Sheffield tell me it is the most perfect place in all the world, with constant temperatures of 23c and nary a drop of rain. For some reason I don't believe them, but nevertheless I would love to spend some time in the UK visiting a lot of the historical sites. I'd also like to see the World War II monuments in France. We have many visitors from England here in Orlando, Mark, and they're always interesting to interact with! Keep enjoying Florida, you're keeping it income tax free for residents.

Well, London will always be my fave city to visit, you could spend five weeks there and not run out of things to do. I did visit Paris once, but I was not impressed with the people there nor the spirit of the nation as a whole. I would like to see more of England and Wales, although the problem of finding "home bases" other than London and not losing valuable time to traveling is not easily solved. I am still weighing the idea of taking a trip where I would travel the Welsh coast or the east coast of Ireland staying in B & Bs, but something like that is a lot of trouble to set up or you risk lousy accomodations. There is also precious little night life in the areas away from the cities, so evenings end early.

I like Aruba myself. It's warm, quiet , and the beaches are awesome. The water is crystal clear and the scuba diving is fantastic! I visited the south of France as a young adult just out of college. We hit Nice and a few other spots, and it was a blast. Hopefully one day I'll be able to make it back! Russ

Hi Russ,
Aruba? One on the Dutch Antilles, is it? I have never known anybody go there or even mention it so it seems an unlikely holiday destination. But, I suppose, from where you live, it is a more likely choice.
I am not one for going away on holiday very often. I have only had foreign holidays on three occasions. Austria (1969), Barbados (1979) and Brazil (1985-6). The first two were wonderful; the last was... well... an experience!
If I make it to the European mainland again, my preferred city would be Prague. That is partly because of my love of Dvorak! I have always wanted to travel from coast to coast (east to west) across either America or Canada, spending some time in the Rockies.
But my dream destination, for obvious reasons, has to be New Zealand. It is not likely to happen in the foreseeable future but someday, perhaps.

It's a tiny island off the coast of Venezuela. Lots of us from up north like to travel there in the winter because it's warm! The weather is about the same year-round, being so close to the equator. The best part is that it makes for a fairly inexpensive getaway. My little sis is heading down there in two weeks (luck gal). She may get a surprise when she opens her suitcase and sees me all tucked away in there! Hellooooo sis!! I was fortunate enough to visit Prague for a few days in '99. I regrettably only had one day to actually walk around (and eat their food - that was the best!), as I was there for a powerlifting competition. I remember be dazzled by the architecture and the history of the city. I too would love to go back on day! Russ

I don't know if I have done things the way I should have done them. I am replying to Belinda's post under the holiday thread and changed the subject to 'Sites to see before you die' intending that to be a new thread. My thinking ran this way. Belinda was talking about sites to see in England. Several people have been and one or two (Katie for example) are intending to visit this year. Why not have a discussion on: - What visitors want to see, why and will they gain what they think they will gain?
- This gives an opportunity for those of us here to better inform, guide, forestall or add their own suggestions
- The reverse is true for us Brits (and others) hoping to visit NZ.
There are several recently published books on this subject in different guises. My purpose here, although I did not prescribe it in the title, was really Hayley-orientated. I wasn't thinking of the obvious classics such as: 'The Taj Mahal', 'Grand Canyon', 'Niagara Falls', unless Hayley happened to be visiting near by. That perhaps is the anchor. Where Hayley is, what should one make a point of seeing? In fact, I've just done that, changed the title to 'Sites to see where ever Hayley is'. It adds (perhaps?) an extra dimension to her concert schedule. Peter S.
