Hi Belinda
It seems that my post on Andrews music & film highlights thread, would be better off here on your thread - or at least on this thread as well !

Hello Mark! Your original post can stay on the Miscellaneous board because Andrew has already replied to it there, but it also fits this thread, so I'll quote it for you. Hi Andrew & everyone
This is a great thread Andrew and I am certainly learning something about the music & films that were around during the late 1980's - 1987 in particular. I am sorry to say though that I remember very little of that period in terms of music etc. although I can say that I have always been a fan of Star Trek and was aware of the movie of that year. Perhaps I should explain, hopefully without giving you my life history !! But also why for me 1987 was a life changing year.
My wife & I married at age 19 (yes this year will be our 29th anniversery and within 2 years (1980) we had sold our first house and using everything we had, we purchased a retail business. Within the following 4 years, we purchased 2 more businesses - running 3 at once. During this period, we also gave birth to 2 of our children. In amongst dealing with staff & payrolls, VAT returns ( thats Value Added Tax for those of you who don't live in the UK) accountants, banks & customers, plus family life, you could say the 1980's passed me by in a blur !!
It was this thread though that made me look back at some old papers in the loft and, yes, it WAS April 1987 when I decided to sell off the businesses and change my life !!
Reading about the music, films artists & actors around at this time, as more of you contribute, is sort of filling in a gap for me. Keep it going and I might soon be up to speed - all be it 20 years late !
Best regards Mark. Richard

Lol, I was two years old! I don't think 1987 was a good year for my family. My Grandmother died of cancer in June, our dog Wheelie had to be euthanised because he bit somebody and we had just moved house. I personally, do not remember anything from that year, I am very sorry! The only thing I probably took notice of was my brand spanking new room that I had all to myself. And whatever else interests a two year old (and I think I have forgotten what those things might be).

Hi Nicola, I'm not surprised then that you did not remember much from 1987 ,only what you were told, which was very sad. i'm sure there was good and bad in that year for everyone Like most years.

Hi Andrew and all, You may remember me saying that I took part in a spelling bee...nine days before Hayley was born. I competed against students from other schools. I didn't win; but if I did I would have been in the national spelling competition held in Washington, DC. I'll quote myself from Andrew's 1987 music/film thread: Hi Andrew I really got into thinking about being 14 again...here's something I really remember...nine days before Hayley was born! I was in the 8th grade in April 1987. I was in a spelling bee on 11th April 1987. I came top in my school in a spelling test and I represented both my school and local newspaper. I competed with about 50 other students from northeastern Pennsylvania; I think I placed around 16th or so. It would be wonderful if I found photos of me from the spelling bee. There are two awards I received as well...I'll post them soon! I have taken photos of the two awards that I won. This was given to me for being a finalist from the newspaper that sponsored the spelling bee. This plaque was presented to me on behalf of my school's Home and School Association.

Hi everyone. I think these two ideas--film and 'What were You Doing'--are super threads and I have felt bad about not making a contribution. The trouble is, that I have never been one to attribute occasions to dates. When I was doing theatre regularly I used to be amazed at people who could say, 'Oh yes, in 19** we did this play and that play and so-and-so took this part and so-and-so took that part and the music we used was...' I don't think I had a PC then, so i can't go into Outlook and find out and my diaries and other reference sources are all stacked away in the attic. I had a look at Wikipedia, but I'm not mentioned there so it obviously wasn't a particularly exciting year as far as i was concerned! However, I did discover that: - they started digging the Channel Tunnel
- 200th anniversary of the US Constitution [Joe?]
- King's Cross Underground fire
- Terry Waite kidnapped
I won't go on, but in order to make a contribution I thought those events might jolt other people's memories of what they were doing in that year. Peter S.

The only thing I can recall from 1987 was the Great Storm which claimed 18 lives (in England) and caused severe damage on 16th October. This from the Met Office... I remember waking at abou 2am to the sound of violent winds and lashing rain. I switched on a radio to discover constant weather warnings being broadcast and very little else. They described it as "gale force" but quickly upgraded to "storm force". For some reason, I chose to sit in the kitchen from where I heard roof tiles crashing through the glass of my conservatory every few minutes. The radio bulletins eventually referred to it as a hurricane (although, technically, it wasn't by the narrowest of margins). By about 6:30, the wind was still incredibly strong but not quite so severe as it had been. I ventured outside to begin to survey the damage. Every nearby house (including mine) had significant sections of its roof missing, broken windows, etc. One garage was completely demolished. The road in which I live is a cul-de-sac from which nobody could get out for three days! I later discovered that 9 counties in south-east England had been badly hit with an estimated 15 million trees being destroyed. Now, almost 20 years on, I still occasionally see the remains of tree stumps (usually out in the country areas) which are likely to serve as a reminder of that fateful night for many decades to come. The storm is certainly an event I'll never forget and in particular the widespread damage caused to property and countryside. Driving down the M23 to Brighton was like seeing the aftermath of an atomic bomb with large areas of forest and woodland completely flattened.
Nearer home a good friend of mine lost the roof off his bungalow and also it took me a whole day to clear the debris from my garden.
My other unforgettable memory from 1987 was seeing my favourite A.L. Webber musical "The Phantom of the Opera" in London for the first time (it had been open just six months). Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman as the Phantom and Christine were superb.

Hello everybody! I missed the storm because I went to Blackpool to see the illuminations that night. I returned next day to find some of my guttering and fencing had blown down, but no really serious damage, luckily! Best Wishes, Richard

Here's a great time machine to 1987 (or any year for that matter): www.paulsadowski.org/BirthDay.aspFrom entering April 10, 1987 I learned that Hayley shares a birthday with Commodore Mathew Perry! Could this explain why she once picked "Friends" (starring Mathew Perry) as her favorite show or why she's popular in Japan? <--- Things that make you go "hmm".
