This post has been moved from the 'Hayley In Concert' board. , my small digital x12 only zoom is unquestionably limited. i really must make that transition from film but a decent camera is so clunky by comparison. Hi Peter, Interesting you should say that. I bought one of these yesterday: www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_fz30-review/index.shtml Beautiful bit of machinery!! They call them ultra zooms. Exceedingly versatile. Only 1 piece of equipment. Lovely Leica lens. (Leica now owned by Panasonic!!)
It has a 12x zoom which equates to a 420mm lens in 35mm language & with reduced Mp size can achieve ~620 mm lens equivalent. Also has a little on board gyroscope that translates any movement by the operator into compensating movement by a lens in the opposite direction. Fascinating.
This afternoon I was near our local lake photographing Pelicans (two legged variety complete with wings & beak) with the camera to familiarise myself with it. Graemek

This post has been moved from the 'Hayley In Concert ' board. Hi and thank you for the tip-off.
It does indeed look a most exciting item of equipment. You have reminded me I want stabilisation--the greatest cause of my dud photos. However, the problem I have is that I am unlikely to go back to film and I do not wish to write off a few hundred pounds of additional lenses. However, I have not dismissed a complete 'write-off and start again' philosophy.
Thank you, i've bookmarked that URL. Peter

Hello Graeme! Thanks for posting the link to those fabulous bird photographs. I added the code to link directly to the relevant post, but it may not always work correctly due to all the pictures on the page. It should be OK if you click on the link a second time. Best Wishes, Richard

ATTENTION ROGER PLEASE I crossed threads to STAY ON TOPIC. Superb bird photos graemk. They caused me to open another window and review the web page you introduced me to on your new camera. I have just gone downstairs to check and my telephoto lens (Sigma) gives me 70--300. This complements my Minolta camera's basic 28--80. That 28 has been useful but yours does have a converter bringing it down to 24.5 as well as a telephoto taking it to 714. The reviewer here quotes Hayley: 'Wow!'. I won't waste time about the various other aspects I am looking at which are causing me to drag my heels--most importantly it is the thought of 'writing off' perfectly good equipment in an age when we are supposed to be environmentally aware. I may stay wit film for awhile yet, especially as I am also looking at striking out into video and for 'shooting' Hayley, we are fortunate in having so many good opportunities in the hands of proven competence, why attempt to do a second-rate ape?! Yes Peter, I understand fully the predicament. My fully usable Canon T70 from 1985 with a 28mm WA, plus 50mm , plus 70-210mm, plus a 2x converter awaits my use. It is a brilliant camera & I've passed thousands of pics thru it which I still access, but ,sad to say it's been put out of date. (just like me) I,m tempted to list the plusses here of the new one but I'll spare you. Just a couple tho: take as many shots as you like & check immediately if they're sharp (if not press again & you'll get another) Takes movie clips: with a best quality endurance of 11mins. with the 1 Gb SD card. (4 hayley songs at a concert) I'll stop there. Graemek PS some more samples here : hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=offtopic2&thread=1142184025&page=25

Thanks Graeme for your two key points--about which you are quite right--on your new digital camera.
Also, I don't think I commented specifically at the time but, yes, the pictures you are taking with it are indeed superb.
