Hi Peter, You read too much into my post! My views on the EU are mixed. However, this is not the place for such a 'heavy' political discussion, your arguments were too sharp and would be likely to provoke an even sharper response from those who disagree with your views so after some discussion, I've cut out the bits that made it into a diatribe. I thought I'd already got the thread back on topic ( NZ - Did you Know) so here goes again... any takers? Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave.
I note you didn't like my topicality about global responsibility. What is the news at 7:30pm tonight? The failure of the major nations accepting global responsibilityt!! Ah well. If HWI doesn't want to be 'with it', or even 'ahead of it', as I was, so be it!
However, I wrote that, not having had a PM from you as Roger usually sends and not then having seen your public explanatiion, so, okay. It is probably best we have you guys there. Better safe than sorry!
Peter

Hi Peter, May I invite you to read the announcement concerning the content of the Off Topic board which I posted last December. HEREThank you, Roger You may Roger, and I have. Yep, I guess I'm too loose of mouth--or, unlike Hayley, appallingly unfocused! Or is it perhaps multi-focused? Or am I simply just overly diverse!? Peter

.....roger what was on the front of the British ones,Both have the Queen on the back. Belinda Hi Belinda, I have now found my meagre collection of coins. The penny and the halfpenny both heave the Queen's head on the obverse. The reverse has Britannia (seated with trident) and the halfpenny has a ship (unnamed) in full sail. Both coins are dated 1967. The threepence shows a portcullis; the sixpence has a composite design based on a Tudor rose (of England), a thistle (Scotland), a shamrock (N. Ireland) and something which looks like a pineapple but I'm sure it isn't! I guess it might be a leek (for Wales). The shilling has a crown above a shield depicting three lions. The two shillings is similar in design to the sixpence but larger and with a central tudor rose. The half crown has a crown above a shield which is quartered (I'm sure there is an heraldic term for that!) portraying numerous lions... and a harp! Roger

Roger,
I'm fairly confident that 'quartered' is in fact a term in heraldry.

Is it? I am full of oh-my-gosh-ness. I bet that isn't an heraldic term! Roger

"The use of quartering is of course usual practice to denote dynastic marriage."
Whatever that means.
More familiar with hung, drawn and q.
By the way, whilst at Toast a visitor thought that any New Zealand surname ending in "ra" was of Maori origin, any ideas about Hayley's origin Roger. I cannot see anything obvious.

Hi Drew,
That may be so but, in Hayley's case, it would seem to be coincidental. We understand that "Westenra" is a Dutch name. She does however have one Maori ancestor - a great-grandparent, I believe.

Very simply it denotes the 'main' or 'senior' house shield divided to denote the relationship of 'secondary' houses/families as in heiresses, illustrating their source, especially if deriving from a more 'senior' family. I've decided to 'do a Richard' and check the internet. The SIMPLEST explanation is perhaps more clearly expressed than I expressed it. Namely: "The arrangement of two or more coats of arms on one shield to form one bearing, as for instance, the royal arms of England, where those of the several countries are conjoined; when a man inherits from both father and mother the right to bear arms; when an alliance of one family with the heiress of another is to be perpetuated." Did you know Christchurch City is having its 150th birthday,it is being celebrated this weekend, Birthday Info Queen Victoria memorial Christchurch officially became New Zealands first city when Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent on July 31st 1856. It was signed so that Christchurch could be the seat or base for a bishop. That will be why we have a large statue of Queen Victoria in Victoria Square near the Town Hall which is where Hayley sings when she comes home i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifOn Christmas day,1856,Henry John Chitty Harper was enthroned as the first bishop of Christchurch. There is to be tram rides ,punting on Avon,Birthday cake and the Christchurch will wake up to a city "Gift Wrapped" in a sea of Red and Black ribbon, red and black is our provinces (Canterbury) colours. The Birthday cake has 300kg of carrots,120kg walnuts,30 litres lemon Juice,150kg of cream cheese and loads of sugar and butter ,It is a 2400kg cake and is 150m long. It's a shame this is not in a couple of weeks Hayley would have loved seeing it I'm sure. This information is from a extra bit they have put in our paper Called Christchurch 150 years as a city. There is a time line from 1856 and who should get a mention in 2001 Hayley of course, it says Hayley Westenra Signs an International record deal Belinda

Yes, it is a shame Hayley won't be there, but as there isn't any other concert organised (mentioned anyway) then presumably they would not have had one had she been available, but what a way to celebrate that would have been, with Hayley singing 'in the park'? However, it is wonderful that the city time line includes the crucial moment before Hayley emerged on to the international stage. Wonderful news, Belinda, thank you. Do please keep us up-to-date with everything even if it seems mundane and everyday to you. Especially when Hayley arrives back, even a report of her reception by the press would be nice to know, even if it is a private return home. That is something we have to remember, she is on holiday and so even WHI should consider she's 'not available' for the duration. Peter

Hi Peter , there is entertainment all day, jugglers, clowns singers i presume,I meant Hayley would enjoy the day ,the events seeing people she's met in the past, just being there not necessarily part of the entertainment. Although that would have been.fantastic, I'm still hoping she will sing in the park again some day, i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBelinda
