Hello all! Did anyone else personally see today's solar eclipse? I didn't see the total eclipse as I wasn't in Africa or Turkey but I watched the partial eclipse here in Southern England and took a few shots on my video camera, an hour ago. I always enjoy such spectacles and I seriously considered going to Turkey to see the total eclipse but in the end, I didn't. But I did watch the total eclipse of the sun in Devon, England in August 1999. That was a wonderful, eerie experience for me and everyone who witnessed it - although only the brightest middle bit of the corona was visible because of cloud cover. But it was a still a wonderful experience that sticks in the mind for ever. Here is a screenshot from my video of today's partial eclipse. The camera only worked properly when there was thin cloud over the sun, otherwise it was too bright. Dave

Congratulations Dave! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifThat is a totally brilliant photograph, or should I say partially?!!! I forgot all about it this morning, but never mind. Yours is definitely one of the best pictures of a solar eclipse that I've ever seen, so thank you for sharing it so quickly. Best Wishes, Richard

Hi Dave, That's a fantastic photograph of the solar eclipse... That would make an excellent CD cover for: a 'Who Painted the Moon Black' CD single, don't you think? Regards, Andrew

Dave,
Very nice shot of the eclipse, and thanks for sharing, because I didn't know there was an eclipse.. (I felt like I knew but I didn't) until I saw some news about it this morning.

Well guys, I am now suitably humbled by some magnificent photos just published by Pete Lawrence, an amateur photographer and amateur astronomer who lives a few miles down the road from me. He did what I should have done - and nearly did - went to the Turkish coast. He saw what I would have seen - but I didn't Dave

Hello Dave! That is a fabulous shot of the 'diamond ring' as the sun emerges from behind the moon. A very 'engaging' photograph! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCongratulations to Pete Lawrence! Richard

Regards, Andrew Heh, you mean "Who Painted the Sun Black" - this being a solar eclipse. No Steve, Andrew is right! It's the moon that's black because it's a New Moon and the sun's behind it, so the side we can normally see isn't illuminated (except faintly and invisibly by earthlight). The sun isn't black, it's just hidden and in fact, you can see the solar corona and diamond ring! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Cheers, Dave HWI Astronomer Royal Formerly of Greenwich Observatory

Hello Dave,
Thanks for sharing your pic of the eclipse. Glad you experienced the total eclipse in '99. Pete Lawrence took a beautiful pic.
