Many years ago, there was a programme on BBC radio called 'Desert Island Discs'. Each week, a celebrity would be invited to name the 8 gramophone records (yes, it was that long ago!) that they would choose to take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. The choice could come from any musical genre. A track from each disc was played (from number 8 down to number 1) and, at the end, they could also name one book and one luxury item to take with them. Let's play it..... My choices would be as follows: 8) Beethoven's Symphony No 5 - the first classical work that really caught my interest 7) 'The Carnival Is Over' by The Seekers - former friends of mine. 6) Dvorak's New World Symphony - My favourite composer 5) 'Here's To The Heroes' by Mario Frangoulis - My favourite male vocalist. 4) 'Reconciliation' by The Cottars - Just wonderful! 3) 'Ave Maria' by Keedie - A stunning arrangement and performance 2) 'You Raise Me Up' by Becky Jane Taylor' - Very uplifting work and a beautiful voice 1) 'Pokarekare Ana' by Hayley - no surprise there, then! And one book: The Bible and the Complete Works of Shakespeare were provided and let's also allow Hayley's biography 'The World At Her Feet'. My choice (if I am allowed a trilogy) would be: Tolkein's Lord of the Rings - which I have read once but would love to read again. And one luxury: We will assume there is electricity on this island! My computer - so I can read the replies to this thread!!!! Okay, start thinking everyone! Roger

Gramophone records on a desert island? I didn't know they made desert islands anymore. :je
Here are my vinyl choices:
8. Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra - A truly dazzling piece of music if there ever was one! 7. Benedictus from "Pure" - Does it get any better? 6. Silent Night from Hayley's Australian special bonus edition of "Pure" - Brilliant, magical, magnificent! 5. Into the West by Yulia Townsend - A more mesmerizing rendition you simply won't find! 4. Dark Waltz from "Pure" - I could listen to this song forever. 3. Nessun Dorma by Pavarotti - Astonishing, to say the least! 2. Pokarekare Ana from Hayley's "My Gift to You" - Her a cappella beginning in this rendition convinced me straightaway that she had the most beautiful voice I'd ever heard. 1. Both Sides Now from "Odyssey" - No explanation needed!
The book? "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe

Hi Roger,
I've heard of Desert Islands Discs before...I think a newsreader from the BBC (or was it ITV) a while back mentioned Benny Hill's list.
Anyway... 8. 'Men Of Harlech' by Charlotte Church...also sung by fans of Cardiff City football! 7. 'Silencium' by Libera...beautiful 6. 'Across the Universe of Time' by Hayley...duet w/ Sophie 5. 'Dylan's Song' by Aselin Debison...tells the true meaning of Christmas 4. 'The Briar & the Rose' by The Cottars...so emotional 3. 'Moonlight Shadow' by Aselin Debison...an outstanding arrangement 2. 'Scarlet Ribbons' by The Cottars and John McDermott...dynamic vocals 1. 'Hine e Hine' by Hayley...need I say why?
One book... My newly-acquired Chronicles of Narnia set of seven books
One luxury... A tin opener to crack open all those coconuts in the palm trees!

Oh, yeah, and if a CD player is automatically included, I'll change my luxury to a DVD player with Hayley's DVD in it!

Haha, that's cheating, Portia! Good answer though, even if it would have put Roy Plumley (who devised and presented the programme) out of a job! Roger

Hello Roger and everybody! I'm still thinking about this one, but I would certainly take a vinyl LP by Florence Foster Jenkins. I wouldn't want to listen to it, but if I got bored I could amuse myself by throwing it around the island as a frisbee! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes, Richard
