Hi all,
Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" became the longest-running show on Broadway Monday, January 9, with performance number 7,486.
It passed the now-closed "Cats," another show by Lloyd Webber, and the moment was touchingly evoked onstage right after the performance, as a white cat from "Cats" passed a symbolic torch to the current Phantom, Howard McGillin.
Michael Crawford, who created the Phantom's role in 1988, took a weepy bow after Monday's show.
By coincidence, this glittery evening at the Majestic Theatre was the anniversary of "The Phantom's" first preview 18 years ago. The show officially opened on Jan. 26, 1988.
