Hahaha, stale talent. Actually I'm inclined to agree on both of those particular individuals. There are many folks in acting and music that stay fresh, or at least don't go bad: Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Judi Dench, Bruce Springsteen, Bryn Terfel, and the master, Pavarotti, although he's getting ready to bow out now (the man is near 70). Those two are not among them, though, they passed their prime fifteen years ago.
I do agree these shows have become more about the politics of the Left Coast and about money than about actual talent. I can agree that money can't leave the picture, it's always about the bottom line, but I lost faith in the ability of these shows to be objective or even tasteful long ago, long before Michael Moore turned an acceptance speech into a crass anti-Bush rant and Janet Jackson's "malfunction." Let's not forget Marlon Brando sending a B-movie actress pretending to be an Indian onstage to make some comment about how the awards were inappropriate to receive or give until the condition of the Indian was changed, or Richard Gere's ridiculous plea to the audience to joing him in telepathically inducing China to leave Tibet.
But hey, as I've said a few times, it's just up to us, the audience, who do happen to be equipped with eyes, ears, and brains, to use them to distinguish trach from treasure.
