Andrea Bocelli's new album "Amore" has crashed into the Billboard 200 album chart today at number 3 - his highest ever - and getting ahead of Il Divo (who slip to no. 6). Although this is a Bocelli "pop" album and will not qualify for the UK classical chart when released, it does qualify for the US classical crossover chart and is therefore at no. 1 there. Here is the full report from Billboard Chart Alert:
"Andrea Bocelli earns his highest-charting album ever on The Billboard 200, as "Amore" debuts at No. 3 with 113,000 units. The Sugar/Decca/Universal set also hits No. 1 on Top Classical Crossover. It's his second album to open in the top 10 of The Billboard 200; the first was "Sogno," which debuted at No. 4 in April 1999.
Released just in time for Valentine's Day, the new album is a collection of romantic standards sung in English, Spanish, French and Italian. It includes duets with Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera and is produced by David Foster and Humberto Gatica.
Universal is promoting the set with a massive TV ad campaign, direct-response cable spots, an Apple iTunes Music Store promotion offering a bonus track featuring Chris Botti and partnerships with Starbucks, JC Penney and Whole Foods. Bocelli will perform the album's "Because We Believe" during NBC's telecast of the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics Games Feb. 26. The track was sent to adult contemporary radio stations, making it the first Bocelli song since 1999 that the label is working as a radio single.
He will make several TV appearances to support the album, including stops at "Today" (Feb. 9 and Feb. 24), "The View" (Feb. 13) and "The Early Show" (Feb. 15). The all-Spanish version of the album will street March 22."
