Hi All,
On Sunday, 22 October, the German Classical Echo Awards were given out. These awards are comparable with the Classical Brits Awards and the Dutch Edison Awards.
Now, this year, the award for concert performance of the year went to the young Latvian violinist Baiba Skride. I think she is just a few years older than Nicola, and a few years younger than Dutch violinist Janine Jansen.
I was wondering if I should start a separete thread for Baiba, but somehow I don't think she will be able to compete with publicity either in Britain or in Holland with our "local" violinists.
Starting a "related" topic seemed to me the best option - and I ended up chosing the Nicola Benedetti Board for that.
The reason for that is simple. At the Classical Brit Awards 2005, Nicola performed the Carmen Variations by Pablo de Sarasate. At the Classical Echo Awards 2006, Baiba Skride performed the same piece.
So, for people interested, here are links to the two performances:
Nicola Benedetti (with thanks to Dave - I saved it at my Katherine Jenkins site as at that time I wasn't yet prepared for a separate Nicola page)

Baiba Skride

There is a Hayley link here as well - as I have seen Baiba perform live in Germany in 2004, for a TV recording for "Sunday Night Classics" - and Hayley was at the same recording session, performing "Wuthering Heights" - her debut performance on German TV. Now, initially, Anna Netrebko was scheduled to perform at that time - but she was unable to attend for family reasons - and German TV found Baiba Skride as a replacement performer at the last moment.
I hope you enjoy the Baiba Skride performance, as well as the comparison with Nicola Benedeti.
Gerrit
