Elgar described the work as depicting "a wide experience of human life with a great charity and a massive hope for the future", a description that captures the music's grand, expansive and fundamentally optimistic mood. This evening's concert also offers an opportunity to hear one of the UK's most exciting young talents, winner of the 2004 BBC Young Musician competition Nicola Benedetti performing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.
