Music therapy centre welcomes superstar as new patron

New Zealand’s only dedicated music therapy centre is absolutely delighted to announce Hayley Westenra is providing her considerable support as a patron.

Auckland’s Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre had its first birthday on March 18, 2005 and has been an outstanding success currently treating 25 children from as far away as Warkworth.

The Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre helps build bridges of communication with sick and physically and intellectually disabled children and is based on the Nordoff-Robbins approach which emphasises improvisation and other creative techniques.

Hayley Westenra was attracted to the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre after learning about the work of the Nordoff Robbins Centre in England.

The centre has been so successful and the demand for places so great, that is has moved to new, bigger premises and is currently in the process of hiring a second therapist.

About the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre

Music therapy helps build bridges of communication with sick and physically and intellectually disabled children, assisting them to develop new skills and reducing their sense of isolation.

Work at the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre is based on the internationally-acclaimed Nordoff-Robbins approach emphasising improvisation and other creative techniques.

Located in the inner Auckland suburb of Newton, the centre is the brainchild of a dedicated group of local music industry people, including Hinewehi Mohi and Boh Runga.

The centre has received funding and support from a number of organisations including the Lion Foundation, music industry groups RIANZ and APRA, the New Zealand Centre for Music Therapy and numerous private donations.

"I am so proud and honoured to be a patron and my visit to the Centre in August was a very memorable and heartwarming experience. I had the opportunity to meet some of the children who were taking Music therapy classes and was also shown some footage of their progress.

The effect the session have on the children is truly remarkable and so very encouraging. The music penetrates through the wall that seems to exist around the children's connection to the outside world. The team at the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre has done some amazing work so far. Another great find, thanks for posting. It must be difficult for Hayley to decide which causes to become involved with, as I suspect there are so many that she would like to put her name to. Time is such a problem for her right now, I don't know how she fits so much in

I'm a little bit confused here - is it an old article or is it totally new ?! I thought she was already involved with a music therapy centre. She's doing so much for someone so young!

I think it's a new article based on old news. But I'm not entirely sure. It's confusing me too!!

Maybe it's both? She could have visited again recently (as seen by the picture in the article), and this prompted a look at the centre's website which had the old news?

Andrew had started a topic[/url] back in October 2006 about an auction for this music therapy centre.

It is possible that Hayley visited the centre again during her trip to NZ this week but that would probably have been mentionned in her schedule originally posted by Roger HERE.

Hayley Westenra, patron of Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, took time out of her busy schedule to visit the Centre in Newton. Hayley spent time with and performed for the children, including Hineraukatauri Mohi and Hugh Bawden-Hindle. She was accompanied by fellow patron and musician, Boh Runga.

Hi people!

I already Knew about Hayley is very interested about people who has less fortune, whose destiny isn´t walk between the flowers, not only in Raukatauri, around the world but in that center Hayley actually seems to give all to the children, her bests smiles and all the love she has. It would be absolutely wonderful to see that she does face to face becuase I love children faces.

I could hear the theraphy music and I think that It´s a good idea, I wish they became better than they entered in the Raukatauri Center.
