On the occasion of his 75th birthday on May 3, Chairman of the National Geographic Society, Gilbert M. Grosvenor will be honoured at a celebration to mark his achievements and to launch and raise funds to benefit the National Geographic Society's Gilbert M. Grosvenor Fund for Geography Education. Great-grandson of Alexander Graham Bell, Mr. Grosvenor has served National Geographic since 1954. He has distinguised himself as the nation's leading advocate for returning geography education to America's schools. To help celebrate the event, Roseanne and Jimmy Mackenzie of the Cottars, both from Cape Breton (where Alexander Graham Bell spent much of his time) will be one of three stage acts during the gala.The evening gala will take place Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., with dinner and the program to follow at 7:30 p.m. The distinguished master of ceremonies will be NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw. Tickets are US $1,000.
