Guess who I saw last night?
It was the eighth time I had seen Katherine but the first occasion for about 18 months. In that time she seems to have grown enormously as a performer. She seems totally comfortable on stage now and her stage presence is perfect. Of course, during those 18 months, she has gained so much experience but it is perhaps significant that this was the first time I had seen her headlining her own show. Maybe she feels more in control than when she appears as someone else's Special Guest.
Her performance was sensational and included, amongst others, 'Caruso', 'I Vow To Thee My Country', 'One Fine Day', 'Habanera', 'Music of the Night' and 'Time to Say Goodbye'. One of the highlights for me was her rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', a song that I have never really appreciated before but Katherine's performance was remarkable.
Better still was a song, the original version of which never interested me - 'L'Amore Sei Tu' (I Will Always Love You). Written by Dolly Parton, the Italian translation and Katherine's performance would have you believe it is almost a true classical work. It was brilliant and truly beautiful.
For an encore, Katherine sang 'My Way' which, for personal reasons, is a song that means a lot to me. I have never heard it sung so well. The power of Katherine's voice in the final verse was incredible and she got a standing ovation from virtually everyone in the stalls.
Katherine announced that she would be doing a signing session after the concert but that the venue would strictly enforce their 30-minute maximum time! What did they expect her to do, merely initial the things? Sadly, I was not able to stay to find out as I had a lengthy journey home and work today.
Next time, Katherine.
