KATHERINE Jenkins was only five when Live Aid rocked the world in 1985, but that hasn't stopped her being swept up in Sir Bob Geldof's latest messianic crusade against world poverty.
In a snatched chat on her mobile between appointments, Jenkins says: "What is amazing is when he speaks about Africa, everyone shuts up and listens. It comes from the heart, it's infectious, the way he cares. He's passing it on and so many people are really starting to care strongly about it, and together, we can do something about it."
That's why Neath-born Jenkins will perform in Live 8 tomorrow in Berlin.
Jenkins says: "The Berlin show is going to have lots of rock bands and the organisers wanted a contrast. They'd seen me open the tsunami concert. It's a big honour. Being a classical singer, I never thought I'd be involved in Live 8."
London-based Jenkins, 25, says: "I was at home the other day watching a documentary about Live Aid. It showed Phil Collins rushing from London to the Philadelphia show. It made me realise what a massive global event it will be this time. I'm so excited."
Four days after Live 8, she performs in the G8 concert in Edinburgh then makes her debut in Bryn Terfel's Faenol Festival on August 26. There, Jenkins sings alongside Terfel and Aled Jones on the opening "Songs of Inspiration" night. "It's going to be lovely to see Bryn and Aled again," she says.
She's recording her third album, out on October 31 but still untitled. Laughing, she says: "The first one was called Premiere and the second one was Second Nature and I've been getting loads of letters from people with plays on the word 'three'. Like 'Triple Crown' and 'Treble Clef'.
"It's going to be the same feel as Second Nature. It will have well-loved classical music chosen by the fans." But there will be one rarity.
Jenkins explains: "The other day I was doing a radio interview and they got people to call in with questions for me. This gentlemen said 'I've never heard a female rendition of Nessun Dorma. Would you consider doing it?' I said 'That's a brilliant idea, because it will give it a new lease of life.' I've recorded that for the new album and I'll perform it at the G8 concert on July 6."
Jenkins ensures her workload doesn't strain her voice. "Your voice is like a muscle. You do need to rest it so it's in the best form when I need to sing.
"I can't go out to smoky places or eat dairy products before I sing. Between concerts, I don't speak. I carry my pad with me. My boyfriend (pop singer Steve Hart, 32) thinks it's fantastic because he gets peace and quiet!"
