Hi everyone, A very negative review of Hayley's "Treasure" was published yesterday by The Nelson Mail (NZ).

Well, he got that bit right so there's hope for him yet! This is clearly the view of someone who is incapable of recognising good music when he hears it. I almost feel sorry for him. Roger

I will have to totally agree with Mr. Hunt, as he basically said what I thought. Difference between me and him though, is that I have a little bit more respect! What a rude review! I thought he said he was going to 'tread carefully'? He failed on that aspect, that's for sure.
Sad that he actually received hate mail for his opinion though.

I think it's relative to what a person actually thinks 'experimenting' is. That person thought there was too much, whilst I think there is pretty much none. Also, it's not that 'Hayley can not win' It's the same with any artist. No artist will please absolutely everyone, I don't see why it should be different for Hayley. I think what would make Hayley very boring is that if everyone DID agree that everything she does is fantastic. How would she grow? You could argue that she reached her peak, but then what? Carry on doing what she did the same album because it works? Boring. I think any review, negative or positive, should be welcomed with open arms.

Hi Nicola,
You're quite right, it is the same for any artist and I wasn't suggesting that it should be any different for Hayley. It's just that we were discussing her review.

Hey Roger,
I was making a general observation. Too many times do I see negative reviews dismissed as 'they have bad taste' or 'they don't know what they are talking about' which has occured quite a few times in this thread. Actually, you made a similar comment a few posts up, Roger. I can only hope you were not serious. :/ Comments like that wind me up. It just demonstrates intolerence of others opinions and tastes.

Hi All, In my opinion Mr. Hunt is not only arrogant but also very ignorant. He obviously doesn't know what Hayley is "about"... or can't accept the fact that Hayley's album material was actually chosen by her. It sounds as though he doesn't like her image either which reflects her clean living lifestyle. More fool him! Andrew

What I actually said is that the reviewer is "incapable of recognising good music when he hears it". That is my opinion, I am standing by it. If you are criticising me for expressing it, you are as guilty as those who you condemn for chastising a negative review. Like most people here, I appreciate and support Hayley. What did you expect me to say? Roger

You are suggesting that I don't, I see. I find that rather offensive considering all the time, energy and money I have put into seeing and hearing her. I'm sorry I didn't like Treasure, but that does not mean I do not support Hayley. Don't worry, you said exactly what I expected you to say. :/ I don't want to cause friction, as I have always got along with you Roger and admire you as a person, but stating that someone is incapable of recognising good music because they didn't like 'Treasure' does indicate a degree of intolerence. Maybe it's the way you worded it for if you said 'This person is incapable of hearing, what is in my opinion, good music.' it would have come across a lot better. :/

Who on earth is Stuart Hunt? and what idiot gave him a job!! No wonder he receives hate mail, he deserves to! I hardly think his comments warrant being called a review, more a lambasting and NO artist deserves that. There are many words I could use to describe this reviewer, but the only one I can use here is BUFFOON!!Grant

Mr Hunt's review fails because it is patronizing. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but he has used his editorial power to paint his own biased view.of the album.
Yes, it can be argued that Treasure is not as commercial as Pure but that does not distract from the achievement made by Hayley and the producers. Let us not be led to think that the album is the creation of a multinational organisation alone. Far from it, Hayley made a major contribution to its content.
The final analysis will be the worldwide sales figures but it goes without saying that most of us truly believe it is a superb album although quite different from previous ventures.

When I first heard the samples of Hayley's songs I was disappointed and very upset, but everything changed when I listened to the album proper. I keep going on about the album because there is something to it that can't be explained apart from using the word 'beautiful'. It has had a really strange effect on me. But I could understand someones upset if they didn't like it. However I have not got over what I initially said about it on this forum and still believe some people are not my friends anymore because I said that. But on the over forum I believe there are people who don't like me because I keep going on about the album so much, maybe I've overloaded on Hayley a bit, but the conclusion I have come to is that this album has caused a lot of controversy.
I would echo what Roger said though: a music critic should be able to tell good music from bad. 'Treasure' is more than good music.
But I'm upset Nicola has gone, I feel for that her she doesn't like it, it must be so disappointing - thats how I felt before I heard it proper and its not very nice.
