Belinda was nice enough to share with us her videotape of Hayley from 1996 when she performed "The Lullaby of Broadway" at a talent show hosted in some store.
About a third of the way in you see two people pushing a shopping cart and looking up at Hayley on the stage. If only they knew they were seeing New Zealand's future biggest musical export.
What's particularly cute about this song, which was composed by Harry Warren in the 1930s, is that some of its lyrics have been played out in real life by Hayley as her star rose.
The song was used in the Broadway hit "42nd Street" and was set up by the following exchange:
Peggy:
[Spoken]
I'm sorry show business isn't for me. I'm goin' back to Allentown!
Julian:
What was the word you've just said, Allentown?
I'm offering you a chance to star in biggest musical
Broadway's seen in twenty years and you say: "Allentown?"
Okay, let's stop right there. Hayley played Allentown back in 2004 with the Boston Pops.
And then these immortal lyrics:
Come on along and listen to
The lullaby of Broadway.
The hip hooray and bally hoo,
The lullaby of Broadway.
The rumble of the subway train,
The rattle of the taxis.
The daffy-dills who entertain
At Angelo's and Maxie's.
At age 8 Hayley coudn't have possibly known that someday she'd be rolling down Broadway in the biggest American parade of the year.
She never could have imagined the No. 6 subway would be heard rumbling right beneath her feet when she made her solo debut at Joe's Pub! I mentioned this in my review of same, saying that Hayley deserved better. Now I'm wondering if maybe that was all part of the plan.
Hayley has also mentioned the scary taxi rides she's taken in New York City. I can attest, they are extremely rattling.
I'm sure there were dozens more songs which were almost as "prophetic" for her but Belinda certainly captured the best!
