I think Hayley should sing 'You've got a friend'. The lyrics of this song is meaningful.
When you’re down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothing, whoa nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest nights.
You just call out my name, And you know whereever I am I’ll come running, oh yeah baby To see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, All you have to do is call And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ve got a friend.
If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together and call my name out loud And soon I will be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name and you know where ever I am I’ll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall All you got to do is call And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hey, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend? People can be so cold. They’ll hurt you and desert you. Well they’ll take your soul if you let them. Oh yeah, but don’t you let them.
You just call out my name and you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you again. Oh babe, don’t you know that, Winter spring summer or fall, Hey now, all you’ve got to do is call. Lord, I’ll be there, yes I will. You’ve got a friend. You’ve got a friend. Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend. Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend. You’ve got a friend.

In Songs for Hayley to sing, a suggestion was made about Hayley singing country music.and I raised the question as to whether she in fact liked categorisation. That she liked a song for either its tune, harmonics or meaningfulness of its words. So, in singing sad or wistful songs :(I think it would be the tune that would attract and I don't know the tune to accompany the words you quote. My point is, is Hayley interested in sad :(songs? She is such a happy :)girl do sad songs sit well with Hayley? One might argue that Pokarekare Ana is a sad song in the context of its words and subject (accepting Hayley's explanation of the song as opposed to actually understanding it) but the tune is so beautiful and seemingly perversely uplifting in contrast to its subject matter. I'm not suggesting for one minute that Hayley can't handle pathos, but such moods, certainly at the moment, seem in such contrast with her wonderful happy disposition . Converesely, one could argue that because of that happy disposition that is exactly why she would be good at it, because she can so easily uplift the mood again and the pathos acts as a good contrast, helping to even out a wide-ranging programme. Does anyone else have any thoughts? Peter

Hi Peter, It is because Hayley doesn't wish to be pigeonholed that it might be good for her to sing the occasional country song. She has so admirably covered Classical, Songs for the Shows, Celtic and Pop, that I see no reason to neglect Country. I think it would sit very comfortably amongst the rest of her repertoire. I do know the tune of 'You've Got A Friend' and I bet you do too! It was written by Carole King and included on her album, 'Tapestry'. According to WIKIPEDIA it has been covered by James Taylor, Lynn Anderson, Acker Bilk, Petula Clark, Celine Dion, Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, Tom Jones, Mantovani, Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Cliff Richard, Barbra Streisand, Andy Williams and many others. I reckon Hayley could add something to it! Roger

Oh boy, Roger that is indeed quite a list but I am still phased. Perhaps it would be too much (for all?!) for you to upload a wave file of you humming it? Or perhaps a snatch of one pf those recordings of which at least one you must possess?

Sorry Peter, I can't find a clip at the moment and I don't have it myself. As for the suggestion that I should hum it, I would point out that we are trying to attract new members to this forum; not scare them off! Roger

The "Other Music" section is growing rapidly. If Roger posts a clip, we may have to start a new sub-board for him Allen

Now you know how I felt about displaying a larger version of my picture, even though requested, but then, I did suggest it of your voice!
Do you recall, Roger the little carol we, except me, sang grouped around Hayley? Because of my singing reputation I wouldn't even mouth the words anywhere near Hayley! That is despite the fact that I was once told by a director of music that I had an extraordinary voice!

Hi all,
On his recent PBS special, Tommy Fleming has performed this somg with Cara Dillon. Both did a superb job.
"You've Got a Friend" was once the slogan used by the state of Pennsylvania.
