Songs she'll never sing but should

Have you ever listened to a favourite old song and said to yourself, "Hayley would NEVER sing that one, no matter how much we bribed her, even though she'd do a magnificent job if she did"?

Me neither. But just the same, I was taken aback when I learned she was doing "Wuthering Heights" until I finally heard it. To my surprise, not only did she acquit herself admirably, she thoroughly improved on the KB original.

I now present to you the five songs Hayley will NEVER perform, under any circumstances, although she would most likely produce the definitive rendition if allowed to:

1. "White Rabbit" - This was Gracie Slick's masterpiece and no one yet has had the temerity to cover it. It takes great skill and control to gradually build from the gentleness of the song's beginning to its fierce finale. If let loose, Hayley would knock this one out of the park!

2. "Time After Time" - a song so identified with Cindy Lauper it would be a joke to hear anyone else with it, but something tells me Hayley could make this her own.

3. "Un bel di, vedremo" - It's more emotive than "O mio Babbino Caro" and much harder to sing in its full version. I doubt they'll risk having Hayley record this but we all know it would be amazing.

4. "The sun whose rays are all ablaze" - There's no chance on God's green earth Hayley will sing this because it's so syrupy and cutesy, but hey, there's not a better voice on this planet to do it right.

5. "I don't know how to love him" - They say Yvonne Elliman owns this song but I know a singer who can wrest it from her with one hand tied behind her back. Take a guess.

Interesting question, the first song that came to mind....

"My Heart Will Go On"
Everyone associates the song with Celine. It's certainly very different from Hayley's usual style but wouldn't it be nice to hear Hayley sings a power ballad? Imagine if James Horner knew Hayley just a few years earlier

You've started something Steve, possibly, with your latest posting to 'Songs She'll Never Sing' thread?

Until now I have never dared post the following as I feared it would be too out of kilter with everyone else.On the other hand, plucking up the courage to 'expose' myself, the period is 50s and isn't 50s UK culture what we associate with the Kiwi style, certainly Hayley and family's', old worlde charm, manners and courtesy?

'Dear Hearts and Gentle People', (Home Town) Dinah Shore. When was Diana Shore last heard? So, here is an opportunity for Hayley to be completely fresh without danger of any comparisons--not that they would matter. I've not known her yet to be other than preferable to the original recording artist. More particularly, the words are surely empathic to Hayley's view of her home town of which she is so obviously proud?

While in the 50s era and of course now such songs could be viewed in the song style we oldies would view as Music Hall and a style I think Hayley does superbly well (Huddersfiedl)

I Believe, Frankie Lane, Cinephonic Music Ltd Here, a girl singer would not matter if people remember Frankie Lane's version.

She could probably not do the Doris Day song 'Secret Love', because it is as much Doris Day's signature tune as 'Pokarekare Ana' is to Hayley. On the other hand, were she to sing it and this might be a teaser from her point of view were she to consider it, might we not think she was announcing something?

Well, I'm not unknown for jumping in with all six feet flailing--so I have. Do I need to arm myself with a dustbin lid for protection?
