"You always get compared to Charlotte Church because you are a classical singer. How does that feel?
I don't mind, I expect it. People want to pigeonhole you and when I was starting out she was the only female classical singer my age, so it was an obvious comparison to make. I've met her and she's lovely and I think it's great she's following her heart in what she's doing."
Hmmm, seems like Hayley's parried this question with essentially the same answer at least six times that I'm aware of. Given the similarities, I almost wonder if it isn't a rehearsed response. Not that I would blame her, given that in the Glasgow preview this was the first question out of the gate, and I consider that almost rude, to ask a question that has nothing really to do with the person being interviewed.
It is a little at odds with Hayley saying that CC made her nervous the one time they did meet because it wasn't clear what she was thinking, but even that was probably saying too much. Not that I expect Hayley to rip into Charlotte or vice versa, though it would be funny to read comments from the papers like "Saucer of milk for the both of you," but after two years of walking totally different paths, isn't it time to kill this entirely? Andrea Bocelli gives reporters a written statement before any interview saying that his disability is off-limits, would it be so hard for Steve Abbott to tell reporters something to the effect that some areas are off-limits before Hayley comes out? Better still, would it make Hayley appear unnecessarily testy if she were to say "oh, that comparison's been made way too many times, it isn't even valid any more. Next question, please?"
