Today I saw a new compilation which is called 'Arias' in a CD shop. Here is the tracklist.

It is interesting to see that they choose to include 'Walking in the air'. I don't know if it is a new version or the one on 'Hayley Westenra'. (I am not sure. I want to find the answer but find that the CD shop chooses to put Disc 1 on their CD player for customers to listen. There is also no samples on www.hmv.com.hk/product/classical.asp?sku=742949. I think I won't buy it as the tracklist doesn't attract me very much, so there may no way to find out the answer. )

P.S. just find out that hmv.com.hk has spelt Hayley's surname as Westnra. I have just correct it in this post before submitting.

Yes. I also saw a TV ad that promotes it today. The first song they use in the ad is 'Waling in the air'. I looked up when I heard it. I can now confirm that it is the version on 'Hayley Westenra', not a new version.

I don't think that is quite what Raymond said. The song is 'Walking In The Air' but he is telling us that it is the version that appeared on Hayley's self-titled album, not the one on WITA.

Yea a friend of mine heard the cover in this 'Arias' and he compared it to the cover in 'Hayley Westenra'. He came back telling me they were identical.
By the way, the other songs in this album are pretty good too.

and scroll down the right pane, you will find song listings for each of her albums with some samples provided as well. If you are interested in hearing the very young pre-contract Hayley, there are a couple of samples of the album WITA there.

It also says there is a sample of the song WITA as well, but it seems to be the same recording as the one found on "Hayley Westenra"

Hello all,

Actually this raises a minor question I have had for some time - and I am not certain anyone has the answer - but ignorance has seldom stopped me

I note that several tracks from "Walking in the Air" are also on "Hayley Westenra" Were all of the tracks recorded (or in this case re-recorded) specifically for the album, or did they take some tracks from the demo - like "Walking in the Air" and use them as well?

I am curious about this because there does seem to me to be a subtle difference in the maturity of her voice from one track and another - however this could as easily be the less than perfect recording standard in place as anything else. (This is not a critical comment - the budget was what it was) However, the same track is sampled here for both albums.....

The odd thing about this is that I seem to remember something about the old tracks being re-used - the source for this has long disappeard of course, and it could have been a misunderstanding on the part of the reporter as well.

Hi Jon,

According to Pages 55 and 56 of 'The World At Her Feet', there were "technical and legal difficulties with using the existing backings and a new recording would have to be made". I take that to include Hayley's vocal as well as the backing although that isn't absolutely clear.

I get the impression from listening that these are all different recordings on the first three albums.

But.... I will happily listen to them all again..

I do wish they would put the date and time of the recording on the sleeve notes as then there would be no confusion as to which version of a song you were listening to. I also love to have these details as "Historic Notes" as the facts very soon get blurred with the passage of time..

I agree that they are different - with the probable exception of the samples provided for WITA, on albums 1 and 2 - which may have merely been understandable confusion on the part of the powers that be on this site

BTW Roger - I do have her first book and did read through it one time. Unfortunately, at the risk of sounding critical and cynical it struck me at the time as being about 95 percent publicity fluff - and I am also disinclined by nature to take such a book released in the name of teenager very seriously in any case. Having said this, there are probably isolated facts such as the one you cite buried in there, and I should probably read it again at some point with that in mind

Today a copy of the ARIAs cd arrived, for a reasonable price
HK $99, it is about 7 pounds, from HMV Hong Kong.
Nice songs to listen to, with a glass of wine, near the fireplace...........or maybe i can play this music in the Flowershop!!!
