How to post photos in messages [OUT OF DATE]

We are sometimes asked by members new to forums like HWI how to post a photo directly in a forum message. There are three types of photo you may want to post:

1) Photos from a normal website

Let's say you want to post the Hayley image on the end of the following link directly in your message:

www.bbc.co.uk/music/classicpoprock/release/images/cl_hayley_river_140.jpg

When writing the message you want the photo to appear in, click the 4th button along on the bottom row of the "Add Tags" section above - just above the smilies. The tags [/img] then appear in your message and you paste the photolink between them i.e.

and when you preview or post your message, it shows up like this:



2) Your own photos

But if you want to post your own photo images, you need to first upload them to an internet site for storage (hosting). The internet site can be your own Internet Service Provider (like mine) or a free hosting site such as www.photobucket.com . There are many other such sites but I don't know which are the best.

If your own Internet provider provides free webspace, you can usually upload your images there (methods of uploading vary) and use that link to display them in the forum. I use my own Internet Provider Clara.net to host my images, and after uploading them I get a link like this:

www.daveludlow.clara.net/music/hayleywestenra/hwiforumimages/hayleyodysseyse.jpg - which looks just like most other internet links for a photo. You will get something similar from photobucket.com etc., and you then enclose the link between the "Insert Image" tags (same as in section 1) above.

In the "Add Tags" section above your "new message" box (just above the smilies), click the 4th button along on the bottom row. The tags [/img] then appear in your message and when you paste the photolink between them it looks like this:



and when you preview or post your message, it shows up like this:



Well it should do! If the above is as clear as mud, anyone feel free to ask for clarification or more details.

To make the image clickable, I first looked at the original article and clicked on the small image to bring up the large image. I then right-mouse clicked on the large image, selected 'Properties' and copied the URL of the picture from the pop-up window. I then pasted the URL into my post and hid it in the usual way like this:-



I then inserted image tags between the URL tags in my post like this:-

[/img][/url][/color]

Next I found and copied the URL of the small picture in the article using the same method as above. Finally I pasted the URL of the small picture between the image tags. This made the small picture appear in my post, and clicking on it links to the large picture in the same way as it would if I put text between the URL tags (eg click here).

Here is the complete string for the clickable picture above:-



You can use this method to link to any hidden URL from a picture; it doesn't have to be another picture.

Don't worry too much about the special tags I used to inhibit all the visible tags in this post, but you can see how I did it by clicking on 'quote'.

I've just had a thought that the original article with that picture might not stay on the Internet for ever, in which case the picture will eventually disappear. I'll keep an eye on it from time to time, and if the worst comes to the worst, I'll make another post using a picture from my own PhotoBucket album.

I've just posted a couple of photos but are quite small. How do I enlarge them?

Hi Martin,

It is unlikely that you would be able to enlarge an image to more than it original size (as it appears where you are hosting it). You cannot increase the number of pixels and would merely be increasing the size of them. Consequently the quality, although acceptable in a small image, would not be adequate for the larger version. You might get away with a very slight enlargement but I have tried with yours but ended up with a blur which hardly does you justice!

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps the problem lies with the way I scanned the photos as the originals were of course much larger. Could this have been the case? This is in fact the first time I have ever scanned a photo.

Hi Martin,

Yes, if you scan at a higher resolution, you should end up with a larger version which is suitable for use on the forum. If it is too large, downsizing is easy. Just in case it should be necessary, insert the appropriate dimensions in the opening tag, thus:

The width can be up to a maximum of 750 pixels and the height should be adjusted accordingly to retain the correct ratio. But we usually limit the height if necessary so that the entire picture can be seen without scrolling.
