Hi all, I thought I provide you with a little mystery video in keeping with the season. The intention is that you try to identify as much about the following video as possible. (Hopefully none of you has seen this particular video, otherwise it might become an easy one for you ...) Mystery songQuestions that can be answered are: Who are the two singers? Who is the composer of this song? What is the title of this song? Who is the conductor? What is the location? What is the event at which this song was performed (year, and specific occasion)? What is the connection between this video and the Three Tenors? Perhaps you can even think of other details to be filled in? I was thinking of putting this on the Off-topic board, but I think it is quite in place here as well! I hope you enjoy this piece of music - and I'll take the opportunity to also wish you all a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year. Gerrit

Hi Gerrit, For the last week, I have been trying to compile a quiz for this forum and you have beaten me to it so you win before I even read the first question! I think the first singer in the video is Montserrat Caballe. At that point, I was delighted because I believed it was going to be easy. Unfortunately, that's the only question I could answer. Next contender please? Roger

Hello Gerrit and Roger! I have absolutely no ideas at all, but I'll have a guess at the last question. Did the tickets for the concert cost £30? That would be three tenners! Merry Christmas! Richard

Hi Roger and Richard, Well, Roger, you made a start - and your answer as to the first of the two singers is correct. It is indeed Montserrat Caballé. I didn't intend this to be an easy quiz, but depending on the answers, I have a number of clues to give . I hope that more people will join in .... Montserrat Caballé isn't often mentioned on this forum - but anyone here who knows a fair bit about Montserrat Caballé must have a fair idea about the identity of the second singer .... And, Richard, the price of the concert tickets couldn't have been British Pounds - at the time this concert was held, the price would have been put in Lire (even though that also seems to mean 'pound'). Finally, now that Montserrat Caballé has been identified, I mention Freddy Mercury as a clue to the connection between this clip and the Three Tenors ..... Gerrit

The other singer is probably her daughter Montserrat Marti, and the song is prolly Barcelona.

Hi Steven and Richard,
At least we are one step closer. Indeed, the second singer is Montserrat Marti, the daughter of Montserrat Caballé - who by the way was named after her grandmother.
The song in the video of course isn't "Barcelona", but I guess, Steven, you refer to Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury duetting in this song .... There too, you are on the right track. Does this song relate to any specific event?
Richard, that was a sharp observation - There's a bit more info that could be added here.
OK, and as to the composer - check Wikipedia and you might find a clue there ....

Steven, you refer to Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury duetting in this song .... There too, you are on the right track. Does this song relate to any specific event? Gerrit Montserrat and Freddie (possibly one of the earliest contenders for classical/rock crossover artist) duetted on Barcelona which was recorded in about 1988 to launch the Olympic Games which were to be held in Barcelona in 1992. The Three Tenors appeared at the Football ( not soccer) World Cup Finals in Italy in 1990. This was the tournament which had Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma as the theme tune to the TV coverage (certainly in the UK at least) and was responsible for much of the modern popularity of the song. Is the link to do with major sporting occasions? Am I in the right direction or completely off topic now?

Hi James, Well done, this is one of the links I had in mind when I contrived this quiz. The other part about it is that the connection with the 1992 Olympics has not yet been fully explored, although Richard has made the main link ) Gerrit

P.S.
Both the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1990 Football World Cup were held in the European Summer. Let it be clear that that is NOT the seasonal link I have in mind. But there is a seasonal link between the concert at which the Montserrat duet was performed and the current season ....
