Tonight I attended a wonderful concert in the Christchurch Cathedral of the youth orchestra. They were all very good and would give the Christchurch Symphony some competition. It was conducted by Rupert Bond who is from England and has achieved a lot of this orchestra and sadly is going back to England to teach. They started with Rossini's William Tell Overture and I loved the cavalry charge music at the end. The next piece was by John Ritchie called Partita Concertante. John formed the John Ritchie String Orchestra in 1959 and was the precursor to the Christchurch Symphony. He was present in the audience. Cathy Irons was the guest solo violinist and did an excellent performance. After the interval they play Brahms 4th Symphony and they did a wonderful job. The Cathedral is an excellent setting for an orchestra and the acoustics allowed you to hear each section of the orchestra and how they blended together. There were plenty of times I had goosebumps while listening. At the end as a parting gift to the conductor the orchestra played Rule Britannica. Classical music will be in good hands if we can keep some of this exceptional talent in Christchurch.
