Will Martin Concert at Medbury School ChristchurchThursday 27th October 7pm
This concert was one that Will promised to do after the Christchurch concert was cancelled after the February earthquake. Proceeds from this concert went to the earthquake fund.
Will chose Medbury School for the concert (Medbury is an Independent Boys Primary School) as he knew the Head Master when he was 10 years old.
Will then told us a very sad story about the day he went to our local TV station, CTV, in the morning to do a live interview about the February concerts. He then went to Medbury School to see the boys and have lunch when the earthquake hit. All most all of the people in the CTV building died in the earthquake so Will was very lucky that day. He said he still went to the concert in Ashburton that night but it was very nerve-wracking with all the lights above him. Of course the Christchurch concert was cancelled until now.
The Medbury choir opened the show with two songs before Will came on stage.
And I must let you know now that Will is very talented, a great singer and pianist. He is also a great showman, tells some funny jokes and stories.
Will opened his act with a very familiar song
Cinema Paradiso and then a song that Il Divo did.
Will then sat at the grand piano and he played
So Far Away,
Piano Man by Billy Joel and
Your Song by Elton John. I think Will is NZ's version of both singers.
After the interval the choir sang a couple of songs including
Pie Jesu. Then Will played the piano while the choir sang
Hallelujah.
Then one of the funny moments happened. Will said that one of the hardest things a human can do is sing. He showed us why by getting the choir and himself sing the song
The Grand Old Duke Of York. Then he got the audience to sing as well, so far so good. Now the tricky part we had to leave out the word up and that was hard to do lol. Then we had to leave out the word down, also tricky. Finally we had to leave out both words , almost impossible lol.
Some other songs Will sang were
Nature Boy by Eden Ahbez, Going Home, and
Don't dream It's Over by Crowded House.
Will finished with
Anthem from Chess, very stirring. He got a standing ovation from the 200 people in the audience (including our local Radio celebrity Jason Gunn).
Will signed CDs afterwards so I got my CD signed

So if Will is in your area when is back in the UK go see him, he is fantastic.
PS Will wouldn't do the French Anthem lol.
