Tues 2nd April Christchurch Town Hall
Dame Kiri and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra played to a packed Town Hall. I was seated in the choir stalls behind the orchestra. This was a great place to watch the orchestra and the conductor who was Lawrence Renes. But it wasn't a great place to watch Dame Kiri as I only saw her back and missed a lot of the power of her lovely voice. In the first act they performed pieces from Mozart and Strauss. They were Mozart- The Marriage of Figaro Overture K492 Mozart- Vado, ma dove? K583 Mozart- Chi sa, chi sa qual sia K582 Mozart- Nehmt meinen Dank, ihr holden Gonner K383 R Strauss- Morgen, Op 27 No4 R Strauss- Standchen, Op 17 No2 R Strauss- Zueignung, Op 10 No1
The second act they played the 55 minute long work by Mahler called Symphony No 4 in G Major.
This was the first time I have seen Dame Kiri and the NZSO perform and they both were great. At the end they got a standing ovation and returned several times to get our applause.
