This post has been insprired by a post in the official Hayley Westenra forum.
On May 12, the annual Eurovision song contest will take place in Helsinki in Finland. This is because last year, the Finnish group Lordi won the contest staged in Turkey.
Now, in my view, Lordi were simply awful - a pathetic bunch of black magic monsters, which apparently caused the European voting public to be bewitched and lose their senses.
In years gone by, the Eurovision Song Contest has resulted in a number of beautiful ballads. I wish those times would return.
They nearly returned in the recent British final, broadcast on BBC One, called "Making Your Mind Up". Initially there were six contestants, but eventually only two were left, Scooch and Cyndi.
Of these two, I believe Cyndi was by far the classier act, sing a ballad with Celtic influences, and reminiscent of both Celine Dion and Enya. Mind you, even though I couldn't vote from Holland, these two songs were my two favourites. I did think though that Scooch were relying too much on showmanship (on that point they were too much alike to Lordi, even though they were very pleasant viewing, not at all offensive like Lordi).
I do believe Cyndi was the classier act of the two finalists. I also think that the opening part of her song was very reminiscent of a Scottish song, details of which I won't provide at this stage.
I am in the mood of providing puzzles tonight. So I include a link to Cyndi's song, and ask if anyone has the same feeling as me, that the opening part seems to be very similar to a well-known Scottish folk song (and if so, can you name the song?).
If you do think you can name the similar song, please don't mention it immediately - give others a chance to think about it
Even though Cindy didn't win the British preliminaries, my vote would always go to a song like hers!
