You ARE the bea.... oh, well, maybe not! Back on topic... I had it down to Tchaikowsky or Rachmaninov but Classic FM just went and played Beethoven's Symphony no. 9 (Choral) and as I write it's entering the final movement... I voted Other, because my favourite composer has for a long time now been Sibelius. I consider his symphonic poem Finlandia the most beautiful piece of music I have heard. Undoubtedly that will change at some stage .... My second favourite piece of music happens to be Tchaikovsky's 1812 ouverture - but Tchaikovsky is not my second favourite composer - that's Antonin Dvorak, because there's a wider range of music written by him that I like - New World Symphony, Cello Concerto. Two other favourite pieces are Smetana's Ma Vlast amd Joaqiun Rodrigo's Concerto Serenata for Harp (his Concerto de Aranjuez is better known, but I prefer the harp concerto. Gerrit Hi Gerrit, Yes, I forgot about Sibelius' Finlandia and also Dvorac' New World Symphony !! Just too beautiful !!! Love, Marianne

Seems as if Dvorak is doing well - It's got two number 1 votes, and my number 2 vote. Is it an idea to let everyone pick their 5 favourite composers and make up a top 20 of composers that way? I don't think such a poll is possible within this forum software, so results would have to be calculated manually, with 5 points for number one, etc. And if someone can only list 2 composers, those two composers get 5 and 4 points ..... Here would be my top 5: Sibelius Dvorak Mendelssohn (nobody seems to have mentioned him as yet) Tchaikovsky Beethoven (I didn't include Smetana and Rodrigo, as I only know one or two pieces of them - not enough to warrant an entry in my top 5.) This is an interesting poll! Gerrit PS I was aware of the implications of 666 - that's why I remembered it .

Hi Gerrit,
I like that idea - much better than a poll which, as you thought, cannot be adapted to allow five preferences to be named.
There is no reason why we cannot run with both ideas in this thread so, keep voting everyone and also post a list of five favourite composers in order of preference.
My top five are:
Dvorak, Mozart, Beethoven Rossini Rodrigo
There are many others who I admire for one or two works but not necessarily everything they have written. Of my favourite five, there is very little that I don't like.

Hmm, if we had to do a top 5, I think I'd go with Mozart, Verdi, Bizet, Rimsky-Korsakov, and probably Berlioz.

Today my favorite composers are:
Albinoni - his famous Adagio rocks Pachelbel - his Canon always hits the spot Ravel - his Bolero is a perfect 10 Ives - his music is a courier of great vibes Liszt - no list would be complete with him Fauré - make a foray into his music today Offenbach - you can can kick up your heels to his hellacious compositions Orff - in truth, this is among the best Leoncavallo - he wasn't just clowning around with his masterpiece "I Pagliacci"
