I think she has a nice voice. But i am not one to look at technique that much as I do not know much about that stuff. But I do know when something sounds good to me. yest she is young to do some of the songs but alot of the songs on her cd are not classical.

Hi Portia,
Will you please shut up about this? You have given the same opinion so often now, your messages about Holly Stell become boring.
And ehh, how do you spell O mio babbino caro, Portia?

I planned not to speak about Holly anymore. Thanks for telling me to shut up when I already have.
I alternately spell O mio bambino/ O mio babbino/O mio babino, because I've seen song books with different spellings and my fingers go into different directions for different posts.

Hi, sorry, I was typing in a hurry yesterday and should have been more detailed. Basically, it showed a few very brief clips of her singing, a short, cute video of her when she was little, and a brief interview in which she talked about meeting the President and singing with Andrea. I believe thay called her "everybody's favourite soprano" or something like that at the beginning. It may earn her some new fans as it's quite impressive to be featured on a show this big. But I wish they had included more of her singing.

Today my long awaited copy of Holly's CD arrived. I won't go into the frustrating details but get to the good stuff.
Having little to go on I was prepared for almost anything. I will not try to run though each song since my 30 second memory isn't capable of that. (Pause: that little German girl is singing Silent Night again) The best way for me to describe Holly's voice is that she reminds me of a beautiful wind chime with a gentle breeze flowing through it. It just flows up and down the scale in a melodic manner.
I will say that I don't think that wonderful voice is in any danger. She handled the operatic pieces as well as I have heard them done, of course I'm no critic. I thought she handled the Jewel Song very well which was a surprise since she didn't seem to have a full enough voice based on the earlier songs WRONG. Of course the duet with Andrea Bocelli was there, which l love, even though I think Bocelli has too old a voice for the purpose of the song. Someone young, like Billy Gillman, should sing the male part.
There is 1 minute song in the middle that was written by Holly and sang without music that may have a story behind it. The song stands out, not in a bad way, like an incomplete thought. I had problems following the words to some of the songs which normally bothers me but Holly's voice mesmerizes me and the words aren't necessary.
I hope my disjointed comments are helpful.

Having listened to the two (non-video) songs on her site, I am quite happy to say that my opinion on Holly has changed. 'Perfect Shades of Blue' was processed and mixed so much that her voice sounded weak and discordant to me. However, on the other clips, the accomaniment is minimal and one really gets to hear the natural beauty of her singing. While I don't think her voice is strong enough for classical, she will do exceptionally well in the crossover market. For me, she still doesn't surpass any of the young sopranos who have also released CDs, but her voice sounds much clearer and prettier and I had first heard from the video. Someone

Hi Cathleen, I think that's just the sound quality. She sounds like she's singing through cotton. Much different from the crisp, clear clips on her site. If it will be available on iTunes, I will probably buy the album. Oksana

Hi Meagan, it's good to hear from you again. To compare Holly with Pavarotti seems strange but, as she explains, she was initially inspired by his voice, so I guess it is acceptable. There is no doubt that Holly has a very good voice but I feel this particular track was a little ambitious for her when she is still only 13. She coped with it very well but there were a couple of flaws in her voice. Despite that, I think her name will become very well known beyond the US and Canada in a few years time. Thanks for supplying the link, Meagan. Roger
