Just got back from the Classical Sparks concert in Hagley Park, Christchurch. This was a free open air concert with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. There were around 50000 people present on a chilly cloudy night. I always go to this concert as it finishes with my favourite the 1812 Overture. Also present was a young Russian born(now lives in ChCh) violinist who did some solo pieces. She won the Puccini International award for the violin and had the rare privilege of playing on Puccini's own violin. An opera singer also did some arias, her name was Ms Lamont Low, she sung Habanera and Seguidilla from Carmen as well as some other songs. The symphony played the Hungarian Dance No 5, Strauss' Wein, Weib und Gesang (Wine, Women and Song), The Entrance March. They did a local composition called the Juggler and they had real jugglers juggling with fire.
The biggie of course was the 1812 Overture which they did with the NZ Army band. At the end they had fireworks, the Cathedral bells, army cannons going off so it got real noisy but it was brilliantly done.
