US takes notice of Kiwi opera singer

The stellar operatic career of Teddy Tahu Rhodes continues apace,with the New York Times running a feature article on the former Banks Peninsula accountant.
Rhodes 39, performs the role of Count Almaviva in the Houston Grand Opera's upcoming production of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro.
The 39 year old's good looks attracted as much of the Times reporter's attention as his bass-barritone voice, with the piece recounting Rhodes transformation from looking "about as wanton as an overgrown choirboy" to seeming lascivious and dangerous once getting into character.
The Houston Grand Opera engagement is the latest in a string of successes for Rhodes, which include playing Joseph De Rocher in Dead Man Walking, playing the pilot in the world premiere of The Little Prince, and taking the role of Maurice Bendix in the End Of The Affair.
The Times reported Rhodes had turned down a season of New York's famed Metropolitan Opera this year due to a string of commitments in Houston, Hamberg, Paris, Vienna.
However, he was due to sing at the Met next year in a programme yet to be announced.
The Houston Opera Production runs until November the 12th.

The Christchurch City Choir's 2005 season will close on a traditional note with a performance of Handel's Messiah on December 3 in the Christchurch Town Hall auditorium.
A highlight of the performance will be the return of Teddy Tahu Rhodes to Christchurch as a soloist.
The choir's music director, Brian Law, describes the past year as Remarkable and challenging for the choir ": two concerts for the Applaud Christchurch Arts Festival 2005 and Missa Gala performances in Auckland and Christchurch.
We've certainly stretched our artistic and musical wings in 2005, ' says Law.
Every year the question is asked, how can a performance of Messiah be special? and, once again, we have devised a new dimension in our presentation, something that will challenge everything we've done before. This year it's an unbelievable group of Soloists,including soprano Anna Leese, 2002 winner of the Mobil (now Lexus)Song Quest, counter-tenor David Hansen and tenor David Hamilton.
I know the return of one of the cit'ys favourite sons, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, will be a big drawcard this year, especially after the International acclaim he has had heaped up on his roles in many capitals during the year. I think a lot of local people will be congratulating themselves they too identified his brilliance and theatrical talent on our local stage several years ago. Now he's very much in Demand and we are fortunate he is making this visit."Law says.
