I cannot speak his praises enough. So I won't try.
The only thing I'll say is that his music isn't music to slit your wrists to.

Hi folks ! Never noticed this thread before. Leonard has been the soundtrack to my life. Tanita Tikaram was once interviewed about her own music and all she talked about was how brilliant Leonard Cohen is.
His first live album with the grayish cover was the one that got him the "Slitter" reputation "Please don't pass me by .." did'nt help much. ALL THE OTHER ALBUMS ARE GREAT...
THERE IS A FILM OF VARIOUS ARTISTS DOING A TRIBUTE AROUND IN THE CINEMAS AT THE MOMENT (2006) IT IS NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD INTERNATIONALLY. A MUST FOR COHEN FANS.

I always feel this thread is like an empty room where no one ever goes except me, If I write something here there is a good chance that no one will ever read it. ANJANI ( Female Vocalist ) Album: Blue Alert. Songs by Leonard Cohen and AnjaniMusic arranged and performed Anjani. COLUMBIA 886970 88082 Sony BMG This album is as smooth as satin. There is plenty of space around the vocals and the instruments. She sings as if she has all the time in the world.. It sounds a bit like Norah Jones or Sissel, mature and worldly. Also look out for Madeleine Peyroux singing Dance me to the end of love.. Also note Leonard Cohen is a big fan of the Dalai Lama and spent a lot of time with the monks in contemplation. I wonder if Hayley will ever record a Leonard Cohen song (You may laugh now ) comet

Hi Comet, I can see why you think that way but it isn't exactly the case. If you go back to the Index page for this board, you can see this particular thread has been viewed (at the time of writing) 81 times. Considering only three people have contributed (one of whom no longer logs in), that is not too bad. And as new members join, you may find some who are fans of Leonard Cohen. At least my post now indicates I have read it! Roger

Hi comet,
Just to let you know I grew up (?) with him too! Isn't he living on an island somewhere in the Mediterranean?

Hi Comet
I saw Leonard Cohen in concert twice. He appeared at the legendary Isle of Wight festival in 1970. The set list was
Leonard Cohen and the Army * Bird On The Wire *So Long, Marianne *You Know Who I Am* Dead Song (poem)* Lady Midnight * They Locked Up A Man (poem) * A Person Who Eats Meat (poem)* One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong*The Stranger Song * Tonight Will Be Fine* Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye* Diamonds In The Mine *Suzanne* Sing Another Song, Boys* The Partisan* Famous Blue Raincoat* Seems So Long Ago, Nancy
There is good performance of "Suzanne" on the DVD of the festival. I also saw him at Portsmouth Guildhall about 1973.

Hi Tony, That must have been some experience. Emerson, Lake and Palmer played there too but the sound equipment was acting up on them. I must try and get the DVD.. I see you still live there, I've met some nice people from there over the years..
I used to pass around the corner (Land's End) every night for a couple of years. Was out there the night of the Fastnet race in 1979 , the weather was a bit rough that night !

Hi Tony, That must have been some experience. comet Hi Comet Yes it certainly was. The problem was Leonard Cohen had to follow Jimi Hendiix's set and it was about 3am. Joan Baez then closed the festival. You can read more here www.ukrockfestivals.com/iow1970menu.html . We have more in common than you think as my maternal granparents moved up from Galway to Sandycove, Co. Dublin and lived there for 16 years or so. I visit Dun Laoghaire each year for a few days and pay a visit to the family grave at Deans Grange. Tony

Hi Tony and Paddy. To keep it on thread. I only recently discovered there are lots of bootleg recordings on the rounds mainly available through E bay, both video and sound recordings. Some are a bit rough in the quality department but great to hear anyway. Leonard is not at all shy about hitting dud notes or complete sequences of dud notes or lapsing into conversation with the audience, his sense of humour is odd to say the least. I'm still trying to make sense of some of his novels and other written works, the term "daft as a brush" springs to mind occasionally. AND OFF THREAD .. TONY. As children we often swam at the "Forty Foot" in Sandycove as it was within cycling distance of our home and almost every other beach between Dublin and Waterford. The seawater is CLEANER now than it was in the 60s and 70s. comet

Tony Hi I see Youtube has that performance here www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqu3U05tkAw. Comet, There are a couple of clips from that ELP set you referred to as well on Youtube. I see there are now 251 Hayley related clips on Youtube www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hayley+westenra There is now a free Youtube downloader that allows clips to be saved to your hard drive. I do not know about the legality of this but I am sure Dave will advise. Tony
