I hope this doesn't become too confusing, starting a thread about two different singers. There probably won't be much traffic in this thread though, so I'll risk it for now
Two other young singers who hit the big time in the UK at the same time as Hayley are Katie Melua and Jamie Cullum. I have followed the progress of both, and although Hayley out-sold them in 2003, both have now sold quite a lot more albums than Hayley, over the last two years. They have, however, concentrated most of their efforts in the UK over that time rather than spreading their efforts over several Countries, as Hayley has done. They have also released singles and have managed to get quite a lot of airplay on mainstream radio and TV music stations. All these things help!
Katie and Jamie are both crossover singers... jazz/blues crossover and jazz crossover, respectively and I well remember discovering Katie... even before I discovered Hayley! Several weeks in fact, before her debut album "Call Off The Search" was released in November 2003. Since then, she has gone on to top the UK album charts, becoming one of the top 5 biggest selling albums of 2004 and selling about 1.5 million in the UK alone... 5 times platinum.
Jamie has done slightly better than Hayley because his sales were more sustained, selling about 1 million of "Twenty Something" in the UK. However... he seems to have suffered the same fate as Hayley... Universal released a "Special Edition" of his album at the same time as Hayley's "Pure" Special Edition and they seem to have made the same mistake. Sales do not appear to have been combined - otherwise Jamie would have a triple platinum album. It looks like they put one too many bonus tracks onto the Special Edition so, he only has a double platinum album as far as I can tell, when it should really be a triple platinum. Grrr!!! at Universal, for getting it wrong once again.
As you can see, both these singers have several things in common with Hayley (well in my mind anyway) - and now, they have even more in common. Their next albums are to be released on September 26th in the UK - the same date as Odyssey!
So, it will be very interesting to see how well their advance orders go, compared to Hayley... and of course, in the week after September 26th in the UK, it will be the "Battle of the Crossover Giants!" i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif
