Yep! Except not live, studio recorded. Quite beautiful, I must say! Four whole minutes of bliss.  I wish more people knew about it, but it isn't on YT, or any other album of Hayley's. One of my favourite tracks on the DVD, Often the reason I would take it out to listen to. I do remember receiving it in the post and finding that the outer card cover had been damaged by an over enthusiastic (Not me) carton opener with a knife or other object. I remember checking that the discs and the Jewel case were intact and being slightly disappointed, just put it away in the crate with all the other Hayley items I had been collecting from E Bay etc. Took me a while to find it as there are many versions of Odyssey, I can't believe how many of them are still in shrink wrap. SHRINK RAP good name for a song, I must need a SHRINK  |

Ah yes, except she doesn't know how to pronounce "Islay". Should be "eyeluh". But I doubt she has ever been there! It is one of my favourite places.
And many years ago Donovan (Leitch - folk/pop singer), who actually lived there, pronounced it the same way as Hayley in a song - I guess it sounds better.

I believe the correct pronunciation is "eye-la" not "eye-luh" I can't remember which one, but at a concert a couple of years ago, Hayley produced a letter she had received pointing out the correct pronunciation and that the pronunciation in the song was incorrect. I think (but don't hold me to it) that Hayley took the view that the song wouldn't work with the correct pronunciation - or something like that  Best wishes Grant |

"eye-lay" sounds much better in the song. Nice to know Hayley knows the correct-ish pronumciation though. I think she might like to visit Islay someday. I'm sure she would love it. In defence of my assertion, all island names that end in ay, ey, y, even oy (like hoy or "high Island"), of which there are many from the Orkneys to the Channel Islands are from the Norse language, precursor of the modern Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. I used to speak Swedish fluently about 40 years ago, and I know the ö is the Swedish word for island (pronounced "eurrrgh". In Norwegian it is öy or "eurrrih". (actually the Norwegian ö is an o with a slash through it, but I can't work out how to do it on an English keyboard). So "Isleugh" is perhaps truer to the original than "Isla". If you watch the video "Hayley Westenra on Tour in northern Ireland" I seem to remember it is mentioned and pronounced correctly at one point. Islay is actually visible from County Antrim, about 11 miles away I think. Martin D |
