The term “angelic” is used pretty often as an adjective with singers. But it begs to be used to describe the pipes of one Hayley Westenra, who could sing the Yellow Pages and easily make it sound wonderfully enchanting. After having scored an international hit with 2003’s “Pure,” “Odyssey” finds Westenra a little more mature at age 18, tackling Joni Mitchell’s emotional classic “Both Sides Now” and giving it a youthful exuberance, and co-writing a pop song, “What You Never Know [Won’t Hurt You],” that sounds like a lost gem from the Andrew Lloyd Webber songbook. Whether she’s delving into gospel (“I Say Grace”) or throwing down with classical gusto (“Ave Maria”), “Odyssey” is well-suited to take you on a magnificent aural journey, with no music degree required.

I made a similar remark in the early days of Pure when I commented that "Hayley could sing the Christchurch telephone directory and I would buy it" !
