icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk/sundaymercury/Odyssey by Hayley Westenra (Decca) EIGHTEEN year-old Westenra is everything Charlotte Church is not, with a pure voice, natural beauty and multi-platinum success in the classical charts. Now living in London, the New Zealander's new album will score mainstream success, too, with a lovely interpretation of Jeff Franzell's Never Saw Blue and the artist's own What You Never Know (Won't Hurt You) - a song more at home on the West End stage than in the concert hall. Most attention, however, will centre on Dell' Amore Non Si Sa, a lushly layered duet with Andrea Bocelli that's certain to steal your heart away.

Hello folks! I'm fed up with the continuing comparisons with CC as well. Hayley has become a big star thanks to her own talent, not through being different from somebody else. Apart from being unfair to Hayley, it's also unfair to all the other rising young stars following in Hayley's footsteps. It all seems so unnecessary after all this time, especially now CC's moved off in a totally different direction! Bye for now, Richard

I don't know why there are so many comparisons between Hayley and CC. I don't like this.

I guess some people think it's an honour to be compared to CC. Well, it's not anymore!!

Hi All, Good to see everyones view on this. I'm amazed the press are still repeating this. I thought they had all gotten away from this. But with 2 years on from 'Pure', they are still at it . I think this mainly happens with UK media. They seem to bring CC up, probably because CC is only big news in the UK and it seems they always have to compare you to someone . Emmett

I can see where everyone is coming from on this and, it is annoying that they still seem to be harping back to a former star. However, I think we have missed the real thrust of this one. It is not so much a comparison WITH CC as pointing out how different Hayley is to CC. However, I think that those who keep referring to CC in the same article a really and need to move on. The honour for any female vocalist these days is to be compared to Hayley. Keith.

The honour for any female vocalist these days is to be compared to Hayley. Keith. I agree. Because Hayley is very successful.

How can people be as stupid as to think Charlotte and Hayley, artistically were and ever will be remotely alike? Any half wit would see that they sing two completely different sets of music.

Yes,they sing two completely different sets of music. I don't know why they want to compare Hayley with Charlotte.

Yes,they sing two completely different sets of music. I don't know why they want to compare Hayley with Charlotte. I have a theory about this. No matter how much information Hayley volunteers during an interview, and no matter how many questions she answers, the journalist will always want to add something of their own. Many of them don't know what else to say so they resort to what they perceive as safe ground - the inevitable CC-HW comparision. Shame. Roger

Hello folks! If only the journalist had written the opening sentence slightly differently, like this:- Eighteen-year-old Hayley Westenra has a pure voice, natural beauty and multi-platinum success in the classical charts.I think my version's got more impact, and being slightly shorter I can add the name Hayley! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifNo, I'm not looking for a job as a journalist, because I'd probably put my foot in it some other way! Portia and Raymond, it's only fair to point out that Hayley has recorded several songs that have also been recorded by Charlotte, but Charlotte has now moved off in a completely different direction. Bye for now, Richard

Quite so Richard. It always irritates me when journalists insist on referring to any performer by their surname alone. Why is that? In the article under discussion here, it has already been established that we are talking about Hayley Westenra in the title. From then on, why can they not refer to her simply as "Hayley"? Mansbridge (!)

Why do they do it? Simple. It is ignorance, combined with a total lack of respect for others. Convention states that, if you use the person's last name only, it should be prefixed by a title - Mr., Mrs., or Miss. These day, for those who are not sure about themselves, they may wish to be referred to as Ms. When referred to by both first and last name, convention would normally be to continue later mentions using the first name only. Otherwise, you use the last name preceded by the title. But, these people are incapable of showing any social graces or any knowledge of etiquette. We know that from the way they behave like a rabble at events that can be seen on the news. Keith.
