It seems they are encouraging a noisy affair like the one we experienced at Shepherds Bush. We have learned that is how they do things in New Zealand. I only hope it doesn't become the norm here. I hope not too! Richard

Hi Belinda, I wasn't complaining about audience participation. My objection was to the party atmosphere which was unpleasantly loud. I guess people know why they are going to the concert To enjoy the music.... That's the point. There were times when we couldn't enjoy the music because of the row going on, even though we were in the front row. I'm not saying it wasn't an enjoyable event for those who like that sort of thing but, if you wanted hear Hayley, it was far from ideal. Roger

Hi Roger and Richard It's hardly likely Hayley will do all her concerts in the Uk in this style maybe one a year and you don't have to go. My slight objection to what you said was the line We have learned that is how they do things in New Zealand we are quite capable of siting in our seat quietly and clapping where expected . These concerts are slightly different than Shepherds bush. We are not stuck in a small building . Dave and Hayley have their own mini concerts before they sing to geather and we all join in. These are the concerts Hayley has chosen for us.So i plan to give them a chance enjoy every minute of them i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif and noone should pre judge them. on your Bad experience at Shepherds bush Belinda

While I continue to agree with Roger's view of the Shepherd's Bush concert, from what I have read and heard of it on this forum, I do not believe that the Shepherd's Bush Concert audience-style was typical of " the way they do things in New Zealand". Personally, I love the informal, participative style of the (Irish-style?) 'singing pub' - just as much as the (semi?) formal style of the two Hayley concerts I attended in Dublin this year. However, my impression of the Shepherd's Bush concert was that a significant element of the audience was rude and inattentive, rather than participative and interactive. Indeed it seems to me that, at the highlight of the show for many HWI members, Hayley, at the piano, struggled for attention above the heedless and gratuitous din! I'm sure you'll have a really great time at the NZ concerts (formal or informal). Any New Zealanders I know are just as whole-hearted as the Irish in enjoying themselves ... but always much more polite. Best Wishes for an enjoyable (Hayley-filled) 2008! Paddy

Hi Roger, Richard and Paddy,
I feel I must agree with you on this one. Although I was not at the Sheperds Bush concert I was present at Toast New Zealand in Regents Park London on 15th July 2006. The audience was 99% Kiwi and Dave was top of the bill. During Hayley's set many of them were chatting amongst themselves and although I was right in front of the stage this was clearly picked up on the video recording I made.If they had not wanted to listen to Hayley they could have left the area during her act.

Hi Gordon! I agree with your view, of course, but I wouldn't presume that the heedless noise-makers at Shepherd's Bush were mostly Kiwis. Paddy

I don't think you could really call Shepherd's Bush a bad experience, it was a fantastic night and in the poll on best concert of 2007 even Roger voted for this one. The only gripe about it was the louder atmosphere so that we couldn't hear Hayley in the way we usually can, hence she even said "shhh - it's a lullaby" during the introduction to Hine. However, I think the main problem was a lack of respect and understanding of some of the audience over what they were expecting. The "Ceili" gave a hint that it was not an ordinary concert and I got the impression that many people were there to see either Dave Dobbyn (mainly NZ expats) and therefore a rock show where singing along is the norm; or (like many of us from HWI) to see Hayley where the usual concert experience is different. The problem was that many of the "Dave" fans were not so interested in Hayley's performance, and also many who were there for Hayley did not appeciate Dave and give him the respect he deserved while he was performing. Obviously it also depends on the material performed - to sing along to say Pokarekare ana or Ave Maria would diminish the enjoyment and emotion of Hayley singing them, but some of the "poppier" numbers can be enjoyed by everyone. Remember that many "prom" type concerts are outdoors and people sing along and clap and have a great time - it was at such an outdoor show that I first saw Hayley live. There's no problem with a bit of participation, as long as that is what you expect and as you know in advance what the show is like. I hope you have a fantastic time after waiting so long to see Hayley and that you take many pictures and write a great report for us to share in the occasion with you. Best Wishes, James

............can be enjoyed by everyone. Remember that many "prom" type concerts are outdoors and people sing along and clap and have a great time - you. Best Wishes, James If I sang along James, I think I'd be thrown straight over the fence by both parties. I'd rather let somebody sing who can. Graeme

:2fun: Well I made it safely to Blenheim. It was a cloudy cool day with a bit of drizzle near Kaikoura. Which is where I stopped for a while to film some seals resting on the rocks. It was fun watching the baby seals playing in the rock pools just like human kids do. I passed the venue and it is a massive complex so should be fun. tomorrow is meant to be fine and warm so should be a good concert. Report later. (PS it is handy that the motorcamps I have been staying at have computers and the internet.
