Hello everybody! According to the Cambridge Evening News, Hayley is set to appear at Newmarket Racecourse on Thursday 13th July 2006. Racecourse gig all about McFlyCHART-toppers McFly have joined the pop acts due to perform at Newmarket racecourse this summer. The Brit award winners are due to play after evening racing at the town's July racecourse on Friday, July 21. The band, who released last year's Comic Relief single It's All About You, is the latest act to be announced as part of the popular Newmarket Nights series of evening races and pop concerts. They will join a line-up which already includes Status Quo, Texas, Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and Westlife. Gaynor Haxby, marketing manager for Newmarket Racecourses, said: "We are delighted to have secured McFly to join the fantastic 2006 line-up so far." She said this year's Newmarket Nights were shaping up to be the "biggest and best" ever with the possibility of a record five sell-out nights with a full capacity of 19,000. "We are hoping for another headline act for the July 28 night. But even without that we hope to appeal to all tastes. "McFly will obviously appeal to the younger audience. The Quo always go down well here and Jools is having his 10th anniversary this year. Texas will be a more mellow kind of act while Westlife are obviously going to be a sell-out. "We have sold twice as many tickets as we had this time last year. Tickets are flying out of the door for Westlife and the family enclosure is already sold out for their night on August 18. "We have already sold 8,000 tickets for that night - half the 16,000 that are on sale." The opening night, on June 23, is likely to be a tribute act or West End musical-style show. Young classical star Hayley Westenra will sing at the racecourse with the National Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, July 13 - the middle day of the racecourse's July Festival. It follows the success of last year's Classic FM Race Day when another popular classical star, Katherine Jenkins, sang with the orchestra. It was the first time a classical concert had been staged after racing. Tickets can be booked on (01638) 675500 or (08707) 200201 or at the website www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk/tickets/newmarket_niggth.html09 February 2006 Cambridge Evening News ---------------------------------- Please note, the link to the Newmarket Racecourse web site in the article does not work, but the one in my copy will take you straight to the correct page. Thanks for the brief Richard. I have been talking to the organisers at Newmarket with regards to the different enclosures and ticket prices, The £14.40 General and Family enclosures are less formal but not very close to the finish line, and have no access to the stables etc, the Members enclosure is more formal, and has the majority of the Restaurants in but ticket prices are £24.00 each The main difference to those of us predominantly going for the early evening Classic FM concert is that the stage is set up in the members enclosure and although the gates into the members enclosure are eventually opened, I was informed that those already inside the members enclosure will get the prime positions for the concert! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifTo this end I have booked my tickets for the members enclosure. I thought as I only live about 40 minutes away I might as well take the day off, take the Wife, and Mother in Law to the races, have a picnic and finish off with a super concert. If anybody else is going let me know, as its all day, it will be a good time to meet up with other HWI regulars! Steve H

Hi Richard/Steve. Not sure, depending upon the weather, about the races themselves but it would be fun. However, unaware of the info in Steve's reply I too have now booked the members' enclosure for the evening. Surely members only during the races in the enclosure or if there aren't enough members attending they let others in for a price?
I was put off totally when I read 19,000 (on the night or over the three days i wasn't clear) I hate crowds but i can well understand the thrill performing to such a large audience gives Hayley. Having discovered I could get into the Members' enclosure for the evening I decided i could face 19,000 by not being near them!!!!
Any suggestions for hotels, Steve? I may use relatives in the Norfolk area as i guess all Newmarket hotels will be at a premium.
Peter

Peter Following on from this my ticket has arrived and the implication, although saying the Hayley event, also says 'gates open 11:00a.m. and first race 1:20pm', which begs the question, can I attend all day at no further cost and if so also in the member's enclosure? [Their apostrophe, not mine. I would have placed it after the 's'!]. I'll ring on Monday or Tuesday and update people whwen I've found out.. In the mean time certain persons might note the following extract from their general admission rules: General Rules: No cameras, video cameras or audio recording devices. Arguably this applies to the racing for reasons of tv rights and the danger of 'Sting' operations! However, I doubt they have a security area in which to leave things so it will be a traipse back to the car park or one hell of a late night hassle re-collecting. Further, I have experienced their method of posting tickets, but I'll post that under a new thread 'ticketmaster and theatre tickets' as it is a universal point of information. Peter

Peter Hi Peter, Maybe Gerrit can help in devising an "undercover plan" since he knows most of the tricks of the trade involving cameras He's only been caught once (recently!) to my knowledge! Hi Peter and Andrew, What a shame if we can not use all these budding photographers we are building up in the forum ranks. We will have to work hard on our plans, I think I am taking a small picnic in! and it will be very well wrapped. Steve H

I like your cunning plan.- a willow picnic basket could just be what is called for! I hope the camera is wrapped in plenty of greaseproof paper (both to avoid any potential catastrophes with the vegemite and to keep the greasy fingers of security guards off!) Andrew

Hello Steve! If you've got a telephoto lens, perhaps you could disguise it as a piece of French bread. Of course, Hayley is singing in Paris tonight, but I won't make any jokes about the lunch-pack of Notre Dame! Exit, stage left... Richard

No cameras, video cameras or audio recording devices. Peter Hi Peter, Most concert venues, meetings etc., have such notices but most only enforce them for long-lens still cameras and obvious video cameras. Even then, it's usually at the venue entrance during the initial bag searches and if you get past that, you just have to be eagle-eyed for nearby officials while you're snapping your shots. With SLR cameras, the trick is to fit a small fixed/standard lens to the camera before you enter the venue and if you're challenged during the bag search, demonstrate to them that it's not a long telephoto or zoom lens and all should be well. At the Royal Albert Hall for the Classical Brits, I wrapped my zoom lens in bubble wrap and put it in a small sandwich box in my camera bag, with a 50mm standard lens on the camera, and all was well. Once inside I now tend to be a bit paranoid about security for the first half hour, taking few shots and all snatched and furtive until I've observed what others are doing with cameras - and if people are being challenged. After that, I get bolder I'm sure that most if not all will get away with it at Newmarket if they can keep it low-profile until satisfied that security aren't going round inside the venue hunting for amateur photographers! But when changing lenses on digital cameras be very very careful not to let dust or dirt inside the camera (face the camera downwards throughout the change and make sure the rear of the replacement lens is clean) as dust and dirt on the digital sensor can be a hard problem to deal with. Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the warning about changing lenses on digital cameras, Dave. That is an aspect of which I was unaware(other than the obvious due care one would normally take with a film SLR).
Furtive, devious and seemingly ambiguous all previous discussions about picnic hampers and french rolls or baguettes, I had none theless interpreted the facts so lucidly exposed.in your latest post!
Thank you. Let's hope no officials of any venue we are likely to attend ever read this forum!
However, a serious point has only just occurred to me. I'm not aware of the detail of present legislation about carrying knives. I assume, packed into a wllow hamper basket is an acceptable way of carrying the\ in public. I have a friend who was marched off for interrogatio at the local nick for carrying a small bladed knife she had used to eat her picnic apple over lunch. But then, she was on her way to a Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting in the House of Commons when the security X-ray bleeped at her!

Yeah...that cafe owner used to hide everything in the knockwurst! How 'bout them not allowing cameras at Newmarket! You could always explain to security that you've seen all the day's races and spent the afternoon taking snaps of the horses. Or say that Royal Ascot is your second favourite racecourse !

I like the enthusiasm and the wheezes but I really don't think they'll wash! Sounds too much like the guy with the bloodstained knife in hand looking down at the victim and complaining to police, 'honest gov, where ever it was, when ever it was, what ever it was that killed him i wasn't anywhere near him!'
