In the Belfast-based newspaper, The Irish News, there's an interview with Hayley in their Weekend supplement. Hayley talks about her career, the new album, her Belfast concert and her plans for 2010. I don't have a scanner, but to be honest, there's quite alot of stuff in the interview that we already know, but here's a few interesting comments... ...despite her success, Hayley admits to still being a big kid at heart. "I'm hoping Santa will turn up at one of my concerts, but we'll see," she laughs. (Hmmm, sounds like a challenge for someone! ). ...Still in their teens, Hayley's siblings, Sophie and Isaac, have yet to decide upon their careers, though Hayley doesn't rule out a duet with her sister in the future. Hayley also says when in Dublin, she uses the opportunity to catch up with her cousins, and also has some relatives in Cork that she hasn't met yet. Hayley on her Belfast concert with the RTE Concert Orchestra... "I love the wall of sound behind you that you get when performing with a live orchestra, its quite a thrill". "Things can go wrong when performing with an orchestra. You have to be on the same page as the conductor, but thats part of the fun of it, and I've had great experiences with the RTE Concert Orchestra, so it should be a great concert". Hayley teams up with Boyzone singer Ronan Keating, for the song 'Its Only Christmas', which she says she really enjoyed recording. The song is featured in this year's seasonal movie 'The Nativity!'. "I went along to the screening of it, its great fun. I came away with sore cheeks, from laughing too much". However, the film Hayley associates most with Christmas is that perennial classic 'The Wizard Of Oz'. On looking forward to 2010... "I will be recording an album early in the New Year, so no rest for the wicked," Hayley laughs. "I've been living every girl's dream and have been so lucky to have a job that I absolutely love. I'm going to New Zealand for a month and when I return to the UK I will be working on that new album, which I'm really excited about. I've done alot of songwriting recently and been experimenting with new sounds. I'm not totally sure yet how the new album is going to sound, but I'm just in a really good place at the moment."

What?! Has anyone heard before of that new album? OMH, that girl got an incredible energy... Decca should surely cherish such an artist, cause, besides being successful, she is so productive, XD... And I already knew that, but she keeps amazing me!

Hmm, Hayley has been known to drop subtle hints now and then. Reading between the lines, I'd say she's going to record at least one song from "The Wizard of Oz" and another from its faux prequel, the blockbuster musical "Wicked". My crystal ball foresees a minor direction change to include more tunes from movies and shows on a future album. Perhaps her West Side Story thing was just the beginning. Excellent move.

Hi Michal What?! Has anyone heard before of that new album? OMH, that girl got an incredible energy... Yes we have, but I'm sure the last I heard it wasn't due out until much later in the year. Looks like things may have changed. Dave? Any thoughts? Best wishes Grant

Decca should be able to afford to promote it better now, after cutting back on Winter Magic! Cheers, Dave PS but we don't have many clues about it so it won't necessarily be an international release... more clues are needed.

Oh wow! Judging from what I read in Nicola's interview with Hayley, this might have a lot to do with Hayley being very keen to get back out on the international circuit into New Zealand etc. She said that completing the new album needed to come before new tour dates could be set.
Perhaps Hayley's really putting the pressure on herself to get the album completed so she can go home and tour New Zealand? It sounds like she's busting to do that.

When I first read that, I thought maybe it's another Japanese album. But when she mentioned doing more songwriting, it makes it sound more like THE next album. And as Martin pointed out, why would she mention it in Ireland when it wouldn't be promoted there, anyway?
Another thing, to me, it seems like she's had some false starts on supposedly "working on the new album". She thought she was going to start early last year, and it only ended up being a Greatest Hits album, with only a few new songs. So, we thought it would be this year, and she even said she would start working on the album in May, and wrote about "songwriting with her guitar" on Facebook. Instead, we got a Christmas album. As much as I absolutely love Winter Magic, I'm still getting a little impatient about all this. Even if she starts on the album in January, how soon could the album be out? And starting on the album doesn't mean actually recording it yet.

I think you're reading things into her words that aren't there. I don't think she's dropping any hints. She's just answering questions. The more originality, the better for Hayley, in my opinion. She's already done show tunes. How does one associate The Wizard of Oz with Christmas, though? There's nothing Christmasy about it.

Martin & Libby, The Irish News is a Belfast-based newspaper. The vast majority of its readers are from Northern Ireland (although it is also sold in the Republic and in the UK mainland). The Northern Ireland market is technically part of the UK market. In the north, we are influenced alot musically, by UK television and radio, and the CD charts in the main retailers here are from the UK chart. Although there is an influence from the Republic as well, from Irish television and radio. Libby, I think in this part of the world, we are used to seeing old movies such as The Wizard Of Oz on our screens around Christmas. Even though alot of them aren't Christmas movies, Christmas wouldn't be the same without the likes of ET or Superman Yes, it does seem to be taking a while for Hayley's new album. However, I think we've been rather spoiled in the last year or so, with 2 Japanese albums, A Very Best Of and now, Winter Magic. As long as Hayley keeps churning out albums, I'm happy

What else is new? But the real point is that it's time to speculate as to the content of her next album. We should presume she already has the exact songs in mind since she'll be recording them soon enough. I see no reason for her not to enlarge her showtune repertoire, since musical theatre is a clear option for her down the road. The Yellow Brick Road? Maybe not, but it would be Wicked if she demonstrated more versatility in this general direction.

Hello folks! When I met Steve Abbott in Trafalgar Square last month he did mention that Hayley will be recording a new album early next year. I thought I'd better keep the information to myself, but the cat's out of the bag now! Richard

I thought I'd better keep the information to myself, but the cat's out of the bag now! ... Cats? Did you say cats? Of course! This hints (to me) that she'll be re-recording "Memory -- which is perfect for her now that her voice has matured.

Er.. I think there s a lot of wild speculating going on. I don't expect that she will move towards Musical Theatre at all, I would be very surprised if she did. I think the next album will be mostly based on her own songs, buulding her career as a singer songwriter. Look at it this way. What has she to offer to musical theatre that hasn't been done before? I think if she wants to get into that, she would need to do some real musical theatre, like playing a part in a West End musical for example. I'm not convinced she wants to go that way. I don't think she would express her own unique personality or talent doing stuff like that. Most of it isn't particularly demanding vocally. Hayley is at her best when she is herself in my opinion. My favoutire songs on Winter Magic are all ones that Hayley had a hand in writing, followed by River, that she can perform on her own with a piano. The more Hayley there is in a song, the more I enjoy it. I'm sure she could produce a stunning album as a singer songwriter, and that is the way I would expect her to go. She has to keep ahead of the rest of the "Crossover" singers that seem to churn out the same old stuff. She has the talent to do this by being original.
But she must get some promotion, otherwise it will all be a waste of time!
And this is ildly off topic. Sorry Mods.
Martin
