What a tragedy to befall the good people of Australia. Whatever the cause of the bushfires, I trust that the slow process to heal will commence soon.
Well done to the firefighters who are battling at the front lines.

The thing that I find incomprehensible is that it is suspected that some of these fires were started deliberately. I can only hope that whoever did such a thing is caught and punished, although it is hard to think of an adequate punishment. As a Christian I am supposed to forgive. but in this case it is a very hard thing to do!

As a Christian I am supposed to forgive. but in this case it is a very hard thing to do! Martin Hi Martin, Even tho I live in Australia & have large wads of eucalypt forest visible from where I live, I don't feel personally threatened by the fires that caused the deaths of about 180 humans & roughly 1,000,000 forest animals in the last few days. Merely because they're about 750 kms South West of us here. We certainly smelled the smoke this morning that had been drifted up to us by the wind. Back to the arson: Last night's news had an interview with the Police Commissioner of Victoria & one of the questions put to her was "how many fires burning in Victoria had been lit by arsonists?" She replied that all fires being fought were immediately investigated for that possibility & either eliminated or tagged as a crime scene when enough data had been collected to point to a source outside of natural occurrence. As she spoke, only one of the fires burning in Victoria had a suspected arsonist as its source. This morning a battle was going on to stop 2 fire streams meeting each other and doubling a fire front. Interesting was that in the paths of one of these streams were 5 independant fires that had been lit by lightning strikes from the previous nights electrical storms. In my own recollection convicted arsonists have 1. lived near large population centres & have been noticed behaving strangely by locals & investigated. 2. been members of firefighting teams and harboured some sort of firebug obsession. I share your Christian Conviction too Martin & unfortuneately that includes man in a "fallen" state which includes some pretty crazy behavours....eg. arson...regardless of its horrific consequences to large numbers of fellow human beings. We still need to protect our citizens at large from these types of crimes by isolating the individuals concerned & keeping them clear of opportunities to reoffend. Phew !!!! Graeme

This graphic from the Sydney Morning Herald tells it's own story. This was the situation at 10-02-2009. It's still very dangerous now. Graeme

I was so very relieved when I got letter(couple weeks ago or so ) from my penpal in NSW whom lives just north of the fires and when I looked at the map I thought her town had been in the fires She said she still can see and smell the smoke
