I'm still puzzled as to why this album comes out on 3rd November when the first RoD concert is on 29th October. Surely it should be on sale throughout the tour? Isn't the first RoD Concert on 19 Oct 2008 - Aberdeen Music Hall?

Yes it is, Dean. Grant is very good at counting his CDs but he can't cope when it comes to counting days! Roger

Hi Grant, I think Dave would confirm that albums are invariably released on a Monday (in the UK anyway) and, no doubt, that particular Monday was chosen for good reason - they wouldn't want to release on the same day as another similar artist for example. The tour has to tie in with Hayley's availability and, equally importantly, the venues'.... Hi Roger and Grant, Yes indeed, that's exactly it, Roger. Universal Classics & Jazz have had to balance all their expected pre-Christmas big sellers hopefully to avoid one release interfering with the sales and chart positions of another and there's no ideal solutiion. Look at this list of new Universal classical crossover albums for them to juggle (with some of the dates may well change): Jonathan Ansell – Forever [13th Oct - influenced by his tour] Katherine Jenkins – Sacred Arias [20th Oct] Fron Male Voice Choir - Voices Of The Valley Home [27th Oct] Hayley Westenra – River Of Dreams: The Very Best Of [3rd Nov - influenced by the tour] Andrea Bocelli - Incanto [17 Nov] Royal Scots Dragoon Guards - Spirit Of The Glen Encore [17 Nov] Lesley Garrett – Amazing Grace [24th Nov] Pavarotti – The Duets [24th Nov] That's actually quite a good slot for Hayley, the biggest problem being: a) it's only a "Best Of" and after only 3 albums; and b) all that competition from several artists who will sell more than Hayley will limit her placing on the supermarket shelves. I'd prefer to see a 10th Nov release due to less competition (Hayley may not be able to enter the charts above Katherine or the Fron by 3rd Nov.) and also there's a better chance that it will stay in the chart until Christmas but of course, that might not be so good for the tour. But the date seems to be free, so who knows? Cheers, Dave

I'm guessing that any "best of Hayley" compilation will include only songs she is still capable of performing. Unfortunately, "https://i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifark Waltz" is too demanding for her range at this stage, since she never includes it in her concerts... and so it shall likely be unincluded in her upcoming compilation. What about Benedictus? It's on the list and it's even more demanding! <3 Jenny I'm with Jenny... how can Dark Waltz be out of Hayley's range, when Benedictus is [presumably] not? (I mean that seriously, not argumentatively - I don't really understand much about singing.) Maybe she just doesn't care for Dark Waltz as much and/or has grew tired of it? As an artist, she's bound to prefer singing certain songs, and considering whatever ends up on the album is what she'll be singing at her concerts, dropping a song she doesn't love would make sense. Of course, this theory doesn't explain the absence of Wuthering Heights, which Hayley professed her love for loud & clear. Personally, I expected both Wuthering Heights & Dark Waltz to be included, and I didn't expect Benedictus to be on there. (Strangely enough, none of those three are on my personal list of favorite Hayley songs, but my own mix would not sell as well as a "most popular" mix, so...)

Thanks for posting that, Dori! The video is a bit on the small side for my old eyes (I can't read half of the text!) so I've magnified it and posted it on a rough web page I made in my personal web space. I didn't want to risk posting it on the main HWI site because I'm not yet sure if we are allowed to do that for this particular video. River of Dreams promo video - double size It's still a flash video like the original and hope it works for everyone - I just threw it together! Cheers, Dave

Thanks so much for that link, Dori! Well done, Dave, for your link as well. Oh, but the video quit playing with about 25 seconds left. Joe

Hi Drew, I only listed Universal releases because that's all they have control over. Paying too much attention to the opposition and their release dates is a dangerous game as they can change and anyway, I don't see Il Divo as competition for Hayley, well certainly not for her promo budget! . I see Il Divo as more like Westlife, aiming for no. 1, while Hayley will hope for the top 10 if Decca promote it properly. I still prefer November 10th as I don't want to see RoD out of the supermarkets and pop chart in December, when the maximum possible sales would be achieved. But of course, there's the tour... Dave

Here's the deal with Dark Waltz and Benedictus: Dark Waltz is demanding in a very different way in that it requires "vocal gymnastics" in order to be performed well. Benedictus is much simpler and less dependent on technique -- there is no need for vibrato or portamento, and interpretive phrasing is minimal-to-nonexistent. A singer of Hayley's calibre would have little difficulty performing Benedictus at any age, but only the most supple of voices can do justice to Dark Waltz. Since Hayley has eschewed performing Dark Waltz throughout her adult career I think I can safely conclude that she doesn't have the chops for it anymore.

Hmmm, well your explanation includes a lot of words I don't understand, so I will take your word on this. All this talk of her range changing... does it mean that she can now sing songs she could not before? Or does it merely limit her?

Hi Cherany,
At its best, the human voice is a very sophisticated musical instrument in its own right, and a skilled singer can therefore employ many of the same techniques that a virtuoso does on another instument.
Normally when you sing two notes, it occurs on two different words, or two different syllables of the same word. However, sometimes a singer will change notes on one syllable without a break in the singing. You do this by "gliding" from one note to the other, sliding though all the pitches in between. This is called "portamento" Like most vocal embellishments of this nature, Hayley employs it very sparingly. One example is toward the end of Sonny when she sings "Many years have gone on" there is a hint of portamento on the second syllable of "many"
As for whether or not the change in her voice "limits" her, that depends on a few thing we really dont know. Obviously, you cant play as many pieces on a piano which only has 44 keys as opposed to 88. However, if she is actually picking up lower notes she couldnt sing before, (and there is certainly power in her lower register that wasnt there two years ago) it may actually serve to allow her to sing more material., though possibly of a different kind than what she is singing right now.

Well Il Divo are Sony/BMG) but now, I see that UCJ have filled the 10th November gap. Jonathan Ansell's Forever (complete with Hayley duet!) has been moved from October into the 10th November slot. Now, it all makes more sense! Cheers, Dave
