I would have replaced "singing sensation " with "popera princess" . "SInging sensation" sounds really cliche.

Hello Peter and Richard I think "Chocolate Heaven" is more appropriate! It is very heathly (good for the heart!) and has a very simple recipe:- Ingredients1 x Hayley Westenra 1 x Intimate concert venue HWI Members (numbers may vary) 1 x fiddle player (Fiona Pears preferred) 1 x pianist (Ian Tilley preferred) Green & Blacks chocolate Carefully mix Hayley, the venue and HWI. Add a fiddle player and a pianist and allow to sit or stand for at least two hours. To complete the desert, add rapturous applause ( a standing ovation is permitted in certain circumstances). Finally, add the chocolate to Hayley. Enjoy!! Best wishes Grant

These posts have been moved from 'Hayley returns to Ghana (2008)'. Good cause: Christchurch opera singer Hayley Westenra leads girls to school as part of a United Nations Children's Fund project in Ghana. Roger This one line in the article in the Christchurch Press (Oct 2nd) has caused a lot of letters to the editor lately ending today with a article written by Martin van Beynen. It was caused by a reader saying that Hayley wasn't an opera singer and other readers defending Hayley. Here is todays article and on Monday I will post the letters to the editor.
Sigh, I can't really care less whether Hayley should be called an opera singer or not. Sometimes people just care too much about semantics. But it would still be interesting to see what the public has to say about this issue, so Ross please keep filling us in.

Interesting text but dreadful cartoon ! Looks nothing like her ! As for the question of what sort of singer she is, I don't care. I just like what I hear and I hear what I like !!

Thanks for this interesting article, Ross, and to Richard for locating the ideal thread in which to put it. Sigh, I can't really care less whether Hayley should be called an opera singer or not. Personally, neither could I, Tin, except for one thing. I am sure there are many people around the world who would love Hayley's voice if only they knew about her. But because they see her described as an opera singer, they don't give her a chance simply because they don't like opera themselves. Meanwhile, the opera purists who might read about her and give her a chance, quickly realise that she is not what they expected. Therefore, the opera tag may be losing her a lot of potential fans but I see no benefit to it. For that reason, I find it frustrating. Roger

I recognise Hayley as just chasing her dreams.
Take care, Katie

That's a great way of putting it -- not an opera singer but a popera singer.I never thought of that.
Take care, Katie

Here is another letter in the Christchurch Press:- Then on Sat 25th Oct there was a gossip column written by Chris Schulz about celebrities as well as NZ celebrities and included was this piece about Hayley:- This caused another reader to write a letter complaining about this article, but I thought he was being very kind about Hayley myself:-

It's used by to put people down. Hayley is not popera, she does not affect an operatic style, or sing opera songs in a popular fashion.

I never would have thought something which, to me at least, is a minor (nigh-meaningless) detail would cause such a response.
Of course, given my exceptional fuzziness on genre identification to begin with...
