Roger mentioned in the thread devoted to Taylor that I was the first person he'd met who actually knew who Tommy Fleming was. Yes, Roger, I know of him, though to my knowledge he has not done any gigs on this side of the Atlantic yet. Were he to do one in my area I would most definitely go. For those who don't know him, he is an Irish balladeer tenor similar in a lot of ways to John McDermott, who just recently became again part of the Irish Tenors. He started things out as the lead singer of the Irish band De Danaan but has since gone out on his own. He has a great, but accessible voice, and can easily switch between a version of the Ave Maria, a Celtic ballad, or a semi-pop song like "Sand and Water." He is also an obviously good person and a man of faith, since he frequently closes his concerts by saying "God bless." I actually first saw him on PBS, and if you want to know more about him, or order his CDs, here is where you should go: www.clannrecords.com/Tommy.html BTW, Roger, I also saw John McDermott in concert in the summer of 2003, and managed to talk to him afterward. He's got a great voice and is a pleasant fellow. He was gracious enough to sign a CD for me and it now sits in my collection with all the other signed gems I have collected.

Hi Steven,
Many thanks for the info on Tommy Fleming. I have taken a look via your link and am amazed at the number of recordings that are available. I'm spoilt for choice now! It seems strange that, even the huge HMV stores in London never have anything by him (I check it out every time I'm there). Give him a try everyone; he has a very distinctive and pleasing voice.
....And so does John McDermott. Incidentally, I saw him when he was on tour in the UK with Judith Durham and the Seekers. The reult is, I now have a photograph of me with Judith - taken by John!

I also watched Tommy Fleming's PBS special which aired a few weeks ago. This concert was very inspirational. Tommy's voice easily adapts to each song, whether it be a hymn or pop tune. He sang a beautiful duet of "You've Got a Friend" with Cara Dillon.
Thanks for the info and the link.

You're welcome, and that closing version of "Hard Times" was also great, I thought, though I was surprised to later find out that it was written by Stephen Foster, who also gave us "Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair." Knowing the rough times the Irish have had over the years and hearing the strings-mandolin-pipes accompaniment, I had it figured for an Irish song.

So, Roger, did you order any of his albums? If so, which ones? I think you owe yourself a present.

Hi Steven,
I tried to order the 'Live at St Patrick's Cathedral' DVD but, just prior to finalising the order, it confirmed I was ordering the CD (of the same thing). I cancelled and started again - several times with the same result.
I hope to go to London quite soon so I will have another look in numerous stores and only resort to dealing online if that is unsuccessful.
Thanks again for the link, anyway.

Hmm, well, there's always by phone, I guess. I got the CD from the Basilica at Knock completely by luck while I was looking for the Irish tenors' new CD, which I also found.

Hi Folks, Tommy sings a version of The crow and the cradle it would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up like rugby goalposts.
He was a singer with DeDannan at the time on their single Hibernian Rhapsody.
But the song was never included on the 1995 album of the same name for some strange reason.
