As reported by Steve MacDonald, Hayley will sing the national anthem for the NASCAR Auto Club 500 race in Fontana, California. The event will be televised on the FOX network on Sunday, May 2nd at 3 P.M.

What a brilliant stretegy by NASCAR to have Hayley sing. This way the drivers will want to drive extra fast so they can get home early to play her CD, resulting in much more excitement on the race track.

It's likely the first time those Fontana, California race fans will have stood for the New Zealand national anthem.
[wonders if they'll notice]

Isn't it the American National Anthem she'll be singing? Hayley's acquiring quite a collection of anthems now, the last one being the Welsh one, in Cardiff! By the way, the NASCAR race is being shown live in the UK on Sky Digital (NASN Sports TV). The show starts at 8:30pm UK time on Sunday. Unfortunately, there's a cost of £120 for a year's minimum subscription so there won't be many watching her, apart from American ex-patriots!

About the US national anthem:
In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote new words for a well-known drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven," to celebrate America's recent victory over the British. However, only in 1931, following a twenty-year effort during which more than forty bills and joint resolutions were introduced in Congress, was a law finally signed proclaiming "The Star Spangled Banner" to be the national anthem of the United States.
Maybe after Hayley sings it so beautifully this Sunday they'll rename its author "Francis Scott Kiwi".

I am afraid I don't understand---I videotaped an AUDIO of Hayley singing our National Anthem. They didn't even show this lovely young woman once on the screen.
Maybe some events do this, and I'm not aware of it, but I have NEVER 'watched' ANYONE sing the Star Spangled Banner for an event and not SEEN them while they sang it. This is a major disservice to Hayley and I am sooo disappointed.
Anybody have an explanation perhaps?

This was not Hayley at her best I'm sorry to report. I watched -- ahem, heard it with several people and every one thought she sounded nervous and unfamiliar with the song. It wasn't a total meltdown, though, because they did think her voice was very sweet.

I concur with MaryAda and Steve. I wished they had shown Hayley singing. Still I'm glad I was able to record it.
I am still going to send Keith and Gareth an audio recording of the event.

Hi folks, The audio file and lyrics kindly sent in by Joe AND a video file kindly sent in by Gary are both available from Hayley Westenra International. All you have to do is click on the Radio and Television link on the index page and then select the top item to be able to hear, see and read this latest addition. Many thanks to Joe and Gary. Keith.

I've just listened to then watched it (thanks Guys!) and I think Hayley did OK. Apart from one bit, that is, where she seemed to go too quickly - but soon recovered. But I ain't an American - so what do I know? (very little, I suspect!) It did seem odd, though - the American tradition of the crowd remaining silent whereas in many Countries (such as the UK, or Wales where she recently did this) the crowd would join in and make it a lot easier for the singer! Hopefully, her faux-pas (if that's what it was) won't have done her any harm and the very fact that her name was mentioned may help her among the media who, I think, these sorts of performances may really be aimed at. Fingers crossed.

Hi Graeme, The images of Hayley were superimposed on Photoshop. Joe The images are pretty convincing huh? They had me well and truly vexed when I first saw them!!! LOL Andrew Hi Andrew & Joe, The photoshop explanation sounds the most reasonable one. Another possibility is that they've been created on a 3D drawing program of some sort. eg. if you look at the aircraft created very beautifully in MS Flight Simulator, the designs on the fuselage & wings etc. follow the shapes perfectly. One thing's certain: He's obviously a total Hayley fan. Graeme
