There is now even a video that aired on TV3 about this "hot issue". You can view it here. Journalists are discussing their opinion about what Kiri said. Stephany Hi Stephany, thanks... I found it very supportive of Hayley. The broadband video connection from NZ (to the UK anyway) is very slow with lots of buffering at the moment so I have extracted converted and uploaded the two minutes devoted to Kiri and Hayley - here it is: TV3 All Stars: Mike Hutcheson and Hayley McLarin (not perfect but it'll do ) Cheers, Dave

Hi Joe, Problem is that some Kiri fans know how to use the entire family too! Well my daughter wanted to vote just after me and it wouldn't count her vote! So I had to block all cookies in the IE Tools - Internet options - Privacy section (move the slider to maximum security level)
BUT - when she'd finished voting, I had to move the slider back again 'coz it stops you from logging on to this forum! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Dave

Hi All
I voted over a hundred times but it appears the vote counting software lags a little in showing the updated totals. Still some progress being made.
Hayley Westenra (957 votes, 36.2%) Kiri Te Kanawa (1525 votes, 57.7%) Too close to call (161 votes, 6.1%)

A Story From the British Telegraph: www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/02/25/do2503.xml--------------------------------------------------------------- Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's broadside is off key By Sam Leith Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 25/02/2008 There is no New Zealand-born opera singer who this column would rather be stuck in a lift with than Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. So it dismays me to hear that the silly old thing is on the warpath. The target of her fire is a young compatriot, the 20-year-old pop/classical crossover artiste Hayley Westenra. Miss Westenra toils, figuratively speaking, in the next-door vineyard to Dame Kiri, but a thin row of sour grapes seems to separate these concerns. "Have you heard Hayley?" Dame Kiri asked Auckland's Weekend Herald. "She's not in my world. She has never been in it at all." Of lovely Miss Westenra's breed of amplified pop/classical crossover singers, she added: "They are all fake singers; they sing with a microphone. These people, two or three years and they're gone. People call them up-and-coming, but they never last. They are the new fakes for the new generation." Well, if you say that singers who need a microphone are fakes, you may as well complain that digital photography is cheating, or that Jordan doesn't write her own books. And though the likes of Daniel Barenboim may not enjoy the symphonic arrangements of Baker Street or Radio Ga-Ga, which used to be given away on audio cassettes with petrol at garages, they bring deep joy to people like me. And, of course, singers who trade in part on their looks have a short shelf-life - but the mayfly's brief tenure on this earth is a tragedy for the mayfly, not a grievance to be borne by the giant tortoise. Dame Kiri has a pair of lungs like the bellows of a coal-fired dreadnought - an ocean-going vessel she resembles in more than one respect - and plainly has no need of amplification. Bonzer for her. But if pretty Hayley's warbling is improved by a microphone, and if "popera" poppets of her ilk add to the gaiety of nations and the public stock of blameless pleasures, why should Dame Kiri bother to train her nine-pounders on them? Not only does it seem ungracious, but it leads us to suspect - a suspicion that otherwise would not have entered the head - that, in fact, she does feel challenged by them. You don't hear proper novelists attacking Tony Parsons, do you? ---------------------------------------------------------------

I envision that Dame Kiri doesn't use a telephone either...with her mouthpiece, she could work for Telecom New Zealand ! Glad to see that voting going well ... Joe

It's not a fair fight anyway, Hayley's in MUCH better shape and much younger.

It's not a fair fight anyway, Hayley's in MUCH better shape and much younger. It's a joke poll really, but people perhaps saw Hayley's gentile and angelic appearance as not very tough. But she's very determined and fearless and could well be underestimated.

Hello again folks! I'm starting to get bored with this story, so this will probably be my final comment. I think Dame Kiri's had far too much publicity out of all this, which was clearly her intention! It's all been good for Hayley, but I'm sure it will soon be forgotten. Richard :zz
